The Wise Ones are the female leaders of the Aiel. They do not hold exclusive political power, and co-exist along male clan chiefs, but command respect due to their societal and spiritual importance.

Female channelers and Dreamwalkers among the Aiel train as Wise Ones.

Overview[]

The Wise Ones consist of the channelers and Dreamwalkers of the Aiel.[1] The Aiel prefer not to discuss their role in detail with outsiders. Even among themselves, the Aiel do not discuss what is considered to be "Wise Ones' business".[2] It is considered highly disrespectful to interrupt Wise Ones when they are speaking about their own affairs.[1]

Wise Ones know much about possible futures from their training in Rhuidean. Nevertheless, they are very cautious about telling people anything they know. It is believed that those who know too much about the future either grow complacent, or do too much to try to change their fate.[1]

Training[]

A woman may be called to join the Wise Ones and train with them. If she is a Maiden of the Spear, this means giving up her spears and cadin'sor for good.

A new Wise One apprentice must ask the Wise Ones leave to enter Rhuidean. In the ruined city, the woman will enter the three rings, where she sees her future again and again in variation.[1]
