A Wisdom is a woman who provides healing and guidance to her community. The position is particularly respected in the Two Rivers, although Wisdoms also exist in other regions and nations of the Westlands.[1]

Overview[]

Wisdoms are natural foragers. They are completely at home in almost any natural landscape, and are experts on flora in the area. While Aes Sedai usually rely only on the One Power to heal, Wisdoms use whatever is at their disposal. Tracking is another useful skill for a Wisdom, as particular animals are great indicators for specific plants, flowers, and herbs that the healers like to keep on hand.[2] The art of herbcraft is a great part of a Wisdom's skillset. Many are extraordinary healers, and feel that grief and heartbreak are also things that require their care.[3]

A great skill of Wisdoms is usually being able to "listen to the wind." This is in fact another name for being able to channel the One Power, meaning that many Wisdoms are wilders.[4][5]

Changes from the book series[]

Wisdoms are adapted from the position of the same name Booklink (book spoilers!) in the book series.

  • In the books, each village in the Two Rivers has its own Wisdom, but Nynaeve is described as a Wisdom for all the Two Rivers in the television series.
  • In the television series, a Wisdom cannot marry. It is unclear how universally strict this custom is; Natti Cauthon, a married woman, appears as a Wisdom in the Arches, seemingly as a last resort after Nynaeve leaves the Two Rivers, although it is unknown if this would be equally plausible in reality. In the book series, this is similar, though somewhat less strict. Egwene does also assume she may not marry after Nynaeve tells her about her potential, and informs Rand that it is exceptionally rare for a Wisdom to marry.
