Transcript for What Was Meant to Be, season 2 episode 8 of The Wheel of Time.

Previously[]

Lanfear: You told them all you were dead. Did you think that protects them? Just makes them easier for Ishamael to get to.
Egwene: No!
Ishamael: The more wolf you are, the more you're mine.
Dain Bornhald: What are you?
Aviendha: Where will we go now?
Perrin: Falme.
Min: Mat, you can't go. You kill Rand.
Ishamael: This tea shows you things. Lets you glimpse your past lives. And through all of that, the real one.
Natti: Damn prick like him.
Renna: Did you feel it? Our affinity? You could never hurt me. You will never leave me.
Egwene: I will kill you.
Elayne: What do you think it'll do?
Nynaeve: I don't know, but I hope it hurts.
Ingtar: Turak has a room of curiosities. It's barely guarded. The Horn is what matters, Builder.
Lanfear: Aren't you worried I'll betray you?
Ishamael: Will you?
Rand: They would never turn.
Lanfear: I thought that, too, once.
Rand: Tell me what he's planning.
Ishamael: What do you think Rand will do when he sees his friends are all lost?
Rand: Tell me!
Lanfear: He will break.
Rand: But why Falme, of all places?
Moiraine: The Dragon is supposed to proclaim himself there.
Rand: They want everyone to know who I am before they try to kill me.

Age of Legends[]

Timestamp: 00:01:28

3000 years ago, at what is now known as the Eye of the World. Male channelers stand in a circle around Ishamael, holding him in place. Lews Therin stands before him. They speak in the Old Tongue.

Lews: I don't want to do this again. Not to you.
Ishamael: The others will know you're coming.
Lews: I already have them... Moghedien, Sammael, and the rest of the Forsaken.
Ishamael: This is our chance, Lews. To break the Wheel, make it stop.
Lews: You really think I'd do that? All the people we love would die.
Ishamael: They'll die no matter what you do. So, go ahead. Kill me. And you and I can dance this dance again in our next lives.
Lews: I don't want to do this again. I'm not going to kill you. They say you will be conscious, but not aware. Like a dream. They say this seal is so strong, not even I could break it.
Ishamael: No. No. Lews. Please.
Lews: I know how much you hate being alive. And for that, I am so very, truly sorry, my friend. But... I don't want to do this again.

Lews walks away. The male channelers begin a weave to make the seal, and Ishamael screams. When the weave is done, a seal of cuendillar remains with the ancient symbol of Aes Sedai.

Opening theme.

Whitecloak camp on Toman Head[]

Timestamp: 00:04:35

Toman Head. Young boys walk through a fog between an oasis and Falme. In the distance behind them in the oasis, Dain Bornhald turns and walks back to the Whitecloak camp. He attends a meeting.

Geofram Bornhald: We only have a few hours to take the Tower. That's where they'll keep the witches fighting with them. Until we kill them, there's no hope of taking the city.
Valda: Our scouts estimate they have 28 of the women with them.
Geofram: No one said it would be easy. Our enemy outnumbers us, they are better supplied, better armed, better fortified, but we have something they don't. That's all for now.

The other Children of the Light disperse, but Dain stays with Geofram.

Dain: Why do you pretend we can win? There's tens of thousands of them, Father.
Geofram: Should we give up? The Watchers on the Waves called for help, letters to every queen, every king in the world, to the Amyrlin Seat herself, begging, but no one came.
Dain: You did.
Geofram: These strangers are slavers and murderers. We fight them because we must.
Dain: You think there's a chance the prophecy is true? They say in Falme's greatest moment of need, the Dragon will return to us.

As Dain speaks, the scene glimpses Rand in the Ways with Lanfear, Moiraine, and Lan.

Dain: "Above the Watchers shall the Dragon be proclaimed, bannered cross the sky in fire."
Geofram: Prophecies are just the lies of long-dead witches.

The Ways[]

Timestamp: 00:06:18

Lanfear leads Rand, Moiraine, and Lan through the Ways.

Lanfear: You two are being very quiet back there. Should I worry?

They stop before a Waygate.

Moiraine: This is it? The Waygate to Falme?

Lanfear nods.

Moiraine: Open it.
Lanfear: Why don't you?
Moiraine: Ishamael took my power from me.
Lanfear: Ooh, you are so good at twisting your words in knots. I know you've got it back. I can see it in you.

Lan steps between them, facing Lanfear.

Lanfear: You're alive only because I allow it. Because you have a role to play still.

Lanfear weaves the One Power with a twist of her hand, and the Waygate abruptly opens behind Lan and Moiraine.

Lanfear: When the time comes, raise the banner.

Lanfear makes a blowing motion, and blasts Moiraine and Lan out through the Waygate. The land outside the Ways into water on a beach. The Waygate closes once they're through. They stand in knee-deep water and look around.

Lan: Where are we?

They begin walking toward the shore. Back in the Ways.

Rand: You channeled in the Ways! Machin Shin. Open it.
Lanfear: There are faster ways to Falme than this, even, but I can't take all that dead weight with us.
Rand: How can you think I'd ever trust you again?
Lanfear: I'm the only one who actually cares about you, Rand. Everyone else-- Ishamael, Moiraine-- they just care about what you can do. Come with me.
Rand: Do I have any choice?
Lanfear: You know who I am. Now close your eyes.

Machin Shin circles and screams.

Outside Falme[]

Timestamp: 00:08:11

Perrin, Aviendha, Bain, Chiad, and Hopper approach the gates of Falme. Chiad looks to the East at the thick white fog.

Chiad: That doesn't belong here.
Bain: This will be a long morning, I think.
Perrin: What does that mean?
Aviendha: Many people will wake from the dream today.

Perrin slows to a stop, letting the Aiel women continue. He turns to Hopper and kneels down.

Perrin: Stay. It's not safe. I'll be back.

Hopper sits, and Perrin continues on toward Falme.

Ishamael's room in Falme[]

Timestamp: 00:09:11

Ishamael looks out over the city of Falme from his balcony. He returns to his room to find Lanfear sitting on his bed.

Ishamael: What are you doing here?
Lanfear: I brought Rand.
Ishamael: Now? To Falme?
Lanfear: Oh, don't be upset.
Ishamael: We're nowhere close to ready.
Lanfear: Listen to me. I know you. You will be putting this off for years. Each time saying, "Just one more piece to put in place." You're delaying the inevitable. It will either happen or it won't. No amount of time or planning will change that.
Ishamael: He's not going to choose us, it's too soon.
Lanfear: He's ready.

Lanfear's hand is on Ishamael's chest, and he covers it with his own. They sit beside each other on the bed.

Lanfear: I told him that I'd help him kill you.
Ishamael: Will you?
Lanfear: [scoffs] If he's going to join us, he needs to see that we aren't all the same.
Ishamael: Why did I wake you?
Lanfear: [chuckles] Oh, sweetheart, it's because you know you need me. I balance you.
Ishamael: And I you.

They lean against each other, facing the six seals of the other Forsaken.

Outside Falme[]

Timestamp: 00:11:03

In the fog outside of Falme, the young boys contine to walk. A clearer image of them now shows they wear the clothing of the Children of the Light. They carry lanterns that they swing before them, creating the thick white fog. They approach the gates of Falme. Two guards at the gate step forward, looking at the strange fog.

guard: What is that?
guard 2: Can't see anything.

A Whitecloak calvary bursts through the fog, charging the gates.

guard: Close the gates!

A Whitecloak cuts down a Seanchan guard and the cavalary enters the city.

Geofram: To the Tower!

A room in Falme[]

Timestamp: 00:12:11

Inside a room in the city, Nynaeve is dressed in the uniform of a Seanchan sul'dam. The sul'dam Seta is crying and mumbling. A war horn blows in the distance. Nynaeve turns to Elayne.

Nynaeve: How do I look?

Elayne brushes her thumb at the corner of Nynaeve's eye, adjusting her eye makeup.

Elayne: It's good. What now?
Nynaeve: Now she's going to tell us everything about the place they call the kennels.

The Kennels[]

Timestamp: 00:12:40

Sul'dam march along the walkway outside of Egwene's cell.

Mulaen: Take your spot in battle.

Egwene sits on her bed as Renna gets prepared. As she speaks, she brings over a jar of makeup and places it over Egwene's eyelids.

Renna: The city is under attack from Whitecloaks. The High Lady has ordered all sul'dam and damane to take part in the defense. Your behavior in this cell is one thing, but when a damane disobeys orders in battle, the first punishment is to take her tongue. The second, her hands. Now stand!

Egwene stays seated. She looks at Renna calmly, defiantly. Renna steps forward, pulling her knife and grabbing Egwene by the jaw. She places the tip of the blade in Egwene's mouth.

Renna: I said stand.

Egwene stands. Renna keeps the blade in Egwene's mouth for another moment, then abruptly pulls it away and shoves a golden gag into Egwene's mouth.

Renna: Perhaps it'll hurt more if I take this.

Renna turns Egwene around and cuts off her braid. Egwene's hair falls loose around her face, chin-length. Egwene reaches back and touches her hair in shock. Renna steps on her severed braid.

Renna: Now... come.

Unfallen tears are in Egwene's eyes, but she still looks defiant.

Falme palace[]

Timestamp: 00:13:56

Ishamael walks through the halls of the palace, and Padan Fain joins him.

Fain: My master, you called for me.
Ishamael: Lanfear's betrayed us.
Fain: But she's sworn to him.
Ishamael: There are many paths to walk through the night. I'll have to remove her from the board.
Fain: How? The Great Lord gave her eternal life.
Ishamael: That's for me to worry about. I have another task for you. The Dragon might not swear his oaths. We haven't had enough time.
Fain: But you need him to break the Wheel.
Ishamael: He'll only break the Wheel if he turns to the Dark. And he'll only turn if he thinks it'll save his friends from doing the same. We forced them toward it today. I may have to wait until his next life. I suppose I have nothing if not time.
Fain: Would you like me to kill him?
Ishamael: No. I know who kills him. And what he uses to do it.

Ishamael glances down at the ruby-hilted dagger at Fain's waist, and continues walking. Fain touches the blade.

Timestamp: 00:14:53

In his room in the palace, Mat stares at a fire. The door opens and Padan Fain enters.

Fain: Ah, Mat Cauthon, my best and poorest customer.
Mat: Padan Fain. What are you doing here?

Fain joins him at the table. He takes out the ruby-hilted dagger, unsheaths it, and lays it and the sheath on the table in front of Mat. Mat leans back in his chair, hands gripping the armrests of his chair, looking at the dagger wearily.

Room in the city[]

Timestamp: 00:15:20

Nynaeve questions Seta.

Nynaeve: Don't lie to me.

Seta falls to her knees in pain.

Nynaeve: Where would they have taken Egwene?
Seta: [gasps] Take this off me. I swear, I will give you anything.

A war horn blows in the distance.

Nynaeve: We don't have time for this.

Seta screams out in pain again.

Elayne: What are you doing to her?
Nynaeve: I can feel her in my mind. It's like a bundle of sensations. All I have to do is push.

Nynaeve pushes and Seta cries out again.

Nynaeve: Don't lie to me.
Seta: She'll be on the Tower. But we can't go. I don't want anyone to see me like this.
Nynaeve: We are going to the Tower, and you will take us there. And if you don't, if you even try to get help... I promise you, I'll make you curse the first kiss your mother ever gave your father.

Palace[]

Seanchan guards run along a wall for battle. Beneath the wall, Rand peaks out. Across an opening, sul'dam march the damane to battle. Rand sees Egwene among them. Her short hair is now braided back, ending at her neck. Rand looks around, looking determined.

Mat's room in the palace[]

Timestamp: 00:17:01

Mat still leans back, eyeing the dagger. As he looks at it, he hears whispers in his mind.

Mat: What makes you think that I'm stupid enough to touch it again?
Fain: I know you went back to the Tower to find it. You abandoned your friends for it. No point lying to me, Mat. I can see the shadow in you. We all can. But to see the darkest parts of yourself, to accept them, to embrace them... Well, that's real strength, Mat. Pretend they don't exist like you're some hero from a gleeman's tale. [chuckles] We both know that's not you.
Mat: [laughs] I'm not gonna touch it.
Fain: I think you will. Left long enough alone in this room with just your thoughts and that dagger? You deserve it, Mat.

Fain leaves the room, whistling. He locks the door behind him. As soon as the door is closed, Mat twists in his chair, dropping the facade and showing his struggle resisting the dagger.

Beach on Toman Head[]

Timestamp: 00:18:47

Moiraine and Lan continue walking along the beach.

Lan: The bond, are we going to talk about it?
Moiraine: Do you really want it back? After everything I've done to you?
Lan: I never asked for my bond to be released, nor will I. Stop pretending, Moiraine. I think you're afraid. You don't want me to know how weak you feel. How unprepared. Overwhelmed. Because then you'll have to face it yourself. You can't hurt me anymore, Moiraine. It took me a long time to accept what you said, about us not being equals, but I understand it now. And I believe in what you do, even now, when I know not half of it.
Moiraine: The only reason that I was able to say that you're not my equal... is that I've known one thing to be true since the first day we met. You have always been my better.

Moiraine looks out over the water. Lan steps closer and she looks back at him.

Lan: Let me back in.

Moiraine steps up to him. She closes her eyes and Lan does the same. She channels, weaves of the One Power circle them, and pass through them, connecting them chest to chest. They open their eyes and look at each other, and rest their foreheads together.

City streets of Falme[]

Timestamp: 00:21:31

People run through the streets, shouting, fleeing the attack. Seanchan soldiers run through the streets. Perrin, Aviendha, Bain, and Chiad walk through the streets.

soldier: Move!
soldier 2: Watch out!
soldier 3: Over here!
Perrin: You're sure my friends are this way?
Aviendha: [hand talk] You really saw an Ogier over here?
Bain: [hand talk] I know what I saw.

At an intersection they run into Ingtar, Loial, and Masema. The two humans are dressed like Seanchan soldiers. Loial is carrying the chest containing the Horn of Valere.

Ingtar: Hold it.
Loial: Perrin Aybara.
Perrin: Thank the Light.

Loial and Perrin hug and laugh. Perrin and Ingtar hug next, and then Perrin and Masema.

Perrin: Ingtar. Masema. The Horn. How did you get it?
Ingtar: We had help, a lady from Cairhien. They'll realize what we've done soon. We need to get going.
Loial: We can't leave Mistress al'Vere.
Perrin: Egwene?
Loial: The Seanchan have her.
Ingtar: Sorry, do you know what that is? Do you know how many of our men in Fal Dara died protecting that? The Horn of Valere summons the dead heroes of the past. It's the key to the Dragon winning the Last Battle.
Loial: What of the heroes of today? That is what we are now. We are all the heroes of another age's legend. I think it's time we start acting like it.
Perrin: Where is she?

The Tower[]

The sul'dam march their damane out on the top of the tower.

Mulaen: Sul'dam, with me! Take your positions.

The sul'dam and damane pairs march their positions.

Mulaen: Tia'obiyan!

The sul'dam and damane turn at the command and step up to the walls of the tower, overlooking the city. Egwene looks down at the people screaming in the streets below.

soldier: Take the Tower!

Whitecloaks and Seanchan soldiers fight in the streets. Mulaen shouts a command in the Old Tongue, and the sul'dam respond in the Old Tongue. A damane blasts a fireball into the streets, killing a Whitecloak. Citizens scream and flee. Egwene watches uncomfortably, looks back at Renna, and back at the city. Renna gives a command in the Old Tongue. Egwene doesn't channel. She looks down and sees Whitecloaks in the streets.

Dain: Take the Tower.
Geofram: Take the Tower, men. Kill the witches.
Whitecloak: To the Tower.
Whitecloak: Kill the witches.
Whitecloak: Burn the witches!

The Whitecloaks confront Seanchan soldiers. Egwene channels a massive fireball, hitting the Whitecloaks. She breathes heavily, looking enraged. Renna grins.

Renna: Good girl.

Palace courtyard[]

Turak and his voice walk into the courtyard with an escourt of soldiers.

Turak's Voice: The sul'dam are on the Tower and our soldiers are in the streets now, searching for the Horn.
Turak: Those who have sworn the oaths should be protected, but cut down any man who raises a sword against us. The only thing that matters is the Horn of Valere.

Rand steps out in the middle of the courtyard, facing Turak and his men.

Turak's Voice: Stand aside. I said stand aside.
Rand: You people did this to her.
Turak: A heron-marked sword. Let us see what is required to earn the heron blade on this side of the ocean.

Turak unsheaths his own heron-marked sword and takes a fighting stance. The seanchan guards hold their spears, ready to fight. Rand channels, sending blades of the One Power through the throats of all the men standing to fight. They fall to their knees, bleeidng out. Only Turak's Voice, who is unarmed, is uninjured.

Turak's Voice: From birth to death, I serve the blood.

Turak's Voice unsheaths a dagger and stabs himself in the abdomen. He falls to his knees, dying. Rand walks past them into the palace.

City streets[]

Timestamp: 00:25:22

The Aiel, the Shienarans, Perrin, and Loial walk through the streets. Bain holds up a hand to signal them to stop. In the back, Ingtar speaks softly to Perrin.

Ingtar: They understand battle well, these women.

Seanchan soldiers through an intersection ahead of them.

Seanchan soldier: Are you ready to fight?

Soldiers shouts as one in response.

Ingtar: One man could hold 50 here.
Perrin: There's no need for that.

Bain lowers her hand and they continue. They hear shouting behind them.

Aviendha: They're coming this way.

The Seanchan soldiers spot them and charge.

Ingtar: Go! Take the Horn!
Perrin: Ingtar!
Ingtar: For the Light and Shinowa!

Ingtar confronts the soldiers in battle. The others join the fight.

Ingtar: Go! I'll hold them!

Two soldiers stab Ingtar in the back, killing him. The others get away with the horn.

Beach on Toman Head[]

Timestamp: 00:26:40

Moiraine and Lan are still traveling along the beach. Moiraine has removed the top part of her blue dress, revealing the white shirt underneath.

Lan: You're faster than you used to be.
Moiraine: Feels like I'm running without buckets on my back.

They continue. Moiraine senses something through the bond.

Moiraine: You're thinking about Lanfear.
Lan: I still don't understand why he only woke her.
Moiraine: They're too dangerous, I think, the others. The Forsaken fought among themselves as much as they fought the Dragon. But everything that I could find out said that Lanfear, Lews Therin, and Ishamael were inseparable before the War of Power. They were best friends.
Lan: Just like these kids.

A city with a tall stone tower is visible on the beach ahead of them.

Moiraine: I think I know where we are. Lanfear planned this.

City streets[]

Timestamp: 00:27:37

At an abandoned merchant's table, Bayle Domon pockets some items. People run in the streets. Lanfear walks up to him.

Lanfear: Master Domon.
Bayle Domon: Lady Selene. You're a long way from Cairhien. What do you be doing here? The city's under attack. A good lady like yourself, you-you shouldn't be here.
Lanfear: Oh, I'm not going anywhere. And neither are you. You know that broken piece of cuendillar I sold you a few months back?
Bayle: Aye.
Lanfear: Well, I have an inkling that when this city falls, I can get my hands on some that are fully intact. Six of them.
Bayle: Won't be worth much if we're dead.
Lanfear: Oh, you're not going to sell them. You're going to take them to the deepest part of the ocean and throw them in, where no one can ever, ever find them.
Bayle: Dump them? But... that's a fortune I'd be throwing away.
Lanfear: Oh, I'll make it worth your while.

She pulls out a large coin purse and places it against Domon's chest. He takes it.

Lanfear: Go to your boat and wait for me. I'll bring them tonight.

Domon nods and heads off.

Suroth's room[]

Timestamp: 00:28:49

A lizard moves inside a glassed habitat. Soroth speaks to Alwhin.

Suroth: Does he really think that I won't be on the front lines of Falme's defense? There's glory to be won today.

The door opens and Ishamael enters. He wipes his hands together, knocking white dust from them.

Suroth: Where have you been?
Ishamael: I had other tasks to attend to. The girl's in place?
Suroth: The whole city can see her. It should be me on the Tower defending our people. Now that Turak is dead, it's me the people--
Ishamael: Turak is dead?
Alwhin: And the Horn stolen. If My Lord remembers, you gave it to Turak for safekeeping. Perhaps...
Ishamael: Stop talking. Lanfear, she's working against us. You've held your strongest damane in reserve like I asked?

Suroth nods.

Ishamael: Take them to a ship directly below the Tower, where you have a clear line of sight on it, and wait for my signal.
Suroth: But, Lord, I just...
Ishamael: They know how to gentle a man?
Suroth: Of course.

Ishamael leaves. Suroth and Alwhin look at each other, grinning.

Mat's room[]

Timestamp: 00:29:51

Mat struggles with his temptating to the dagger. He sits, eyeing it. He stands by the windows and rubs his neck. He paces. He gets an idea. He breaks off a wooden staff from the room's decoration. He rips off a strip of leather and lays it on the floor. He uses the staff to knock the dagger onto the carpet, and then push the dagger into place over the leather. Without touching the dagger, Mat wraps the leather around the dagger's hilt and the end of the staff, and he ties it securely. Finished, he lifts his spear. He walks to the door and listens, hears indistinct voices outside. He stabs the dagger's blade through the lock, burning it away.

In the hallway, Padan Fain sits, whistling as he waits. He stops as he sees the dagger cutting through the metal lock. Mat opens the door.

Fain: An hour. [laughs] I thought surely you'd last longer than that before you touched the...

Mat steps out, showing the dagger made into a spear.

Mat: The thing is, I have spent my fair share of time in a cell this year. And I've learned there's usually more than one way out of them.
Fain: What? Stop him!

A guard attacks Mat. Mat stabs him in the stomach. Fain runs.

Fain: Guards! Guards! Guards!

Guards run into the hallway, heading for Mat.

guard: Don't move!

Mat runs in the opposite direction.

guard: Come back! Go, go!

The damane continue sending fireballs into the streets of Falme. Atop the tower, Egwene looks pained as she watches the devastation.

Renna: Again, Egwene.

Egwene shakes her head and looks back at Renna. Mulean and the other sul'dam continue giving orders to their damane in the Old Tongue, and Mulean notices Egwene. Egwene spits out her gag.

Egwene: No.
Mulean: Renna, have you lost control of your damane?
Renna: No. No, I have not.

Renna pulls out her dagger. Egwene looks defiant.

City streets[]

Timestamp: 00:32:44

Nynaeve, Elayne, and Seta walk through the city streets as the fighting continues. The arrive at stairs leading up toward the Tower.

Nynaeve: We made it.
Elayne: Wait. Do you hear that?

Outside the city, trebuchets launch boulders at the tower.

Atop the tower, Renna has Egwene kneeling in the center with her hands out, with Renna holding her dagger over Egwene's wrists.

Renna: This is your last chance. Defy me again.

A boulder crashes into the Tower, knocking back sul'dam and damane.

On the streets, Dain looks up at the Tower.

Dain: It's working. It's actually working.
Geofram: Did you not trust in the Light? Signal the archers! People of Falme, pick up your weapons! Fight with us. Send these slavers back where they came from.

Elsewhere, Nynaeve, Elayne, and Seta continue toward the Tower. Nynaeve looks up at it.

Nynaeve: Egwene.

A Whitecloak archer on the palace wall shoots Seta in the throat, killing her. At the strike, Nynaeve touches the same place on her neck, feeling the sting of it. With Seta dead, the bracelet falls from Nynaeve's wrist. Another archer hits Elayne in the thigh.

Elayne: Nynaeve!
Nynaeve: I'm here.

Atop the Tower, sul'dam and damane lay dead from the hit from the trebuchet. Egwene coughs and pushes a piece of rubble off her. Maigan lies in the rubble, and Egwene watches her collar collapse and roll off her dead body. Egwene eyes the collar. Renna pushes herself from the rubble. She scowls at Egwene and walks toward her.

In the streets, Perrin and the others continue toward the Tower. Perrin looks into the thick dust before them.

Perrin: Wait.
soldier: Let's go.

The Aiel pull up their veils. Bain draws an arrow. From the dust, Mat runs toward them, looking behind him.

Mat: Whoa!
Perrin: No, no.
Mat: Wait, Perrin! Perrin! Perrin! Perrin!
Perrin: Mat!

They hug.

Mat: [laughing] Oh, my old friend Perrin.

The others look at each other confused.

Perrin: Mat. Mat.
Mat: I don't believe it. Perrin, oh, what are you doing here? Who are... Who in Light's name are these people?
Perrin: They're, uh, friends.

There's shouting from the direction Mat came. The Seanchan guards that were following Mat run toward them.

Mat: I hope your friends can fight.
Aviendha: Move!

Aviendha steps between them and brings down a soldier with her spear. Bain takes down others with her bow and arrows. Masema steps into the fight. The fighting continues.

Atop the Tower, Renna walks toward Egwene.

Renna: This is your fault. The Tower was hit from our position. You did this.
Egwene: Good.

Renna grabs her fist and Egwene collapses to her knees in pain, screaming. She braces herself on the ground, with a gold bracelet around her wrist. When the pain stops, she stands and places a collar on Renna's neck.

Renna: [chuckles] Oh, stupid Egwene. The a'dam only works on women who can channel.
Egwene: I know.

The collar expands into a full chestplate, as it does on all the damane.

Renna: [gasps] What?
Egwene: It didn't make sense to me how we could connect to each other. At first I thought it was like the Warder bond. But then I realized that you can see our weaves, too. You feel it when I channel because we're linked. [whispering] We're the same. You sul'dam are just so weak in the Power, the Searchers didn't find you.
Renna: No.

Egwene smirks.

Renna: No.

Renna tries to punch Egwene but falls back in pain.

Egwene: The first rule. You cannot hurt your sul'dam. The only way you're getting out of this collar is if I let you out. But first... you have to let me out.

Egwene channels and hangs Renna up on a stone wall by her collar. Renna grasps at her collar and chokes. Egwene stands tall, but winces as she feels the same pain.

Renna: You're still my damane. You still feel what I feel. If I die, you die.

Egwene holds out. Renna chokes. Renna finally releases the collar and the cuff falls from her wrist. The collar around Egwene's neck collapses and falls to the ground.

Renna: Please... use it.

Egwene stares up at her, unmoved as Renna continues to choke. Renna goes limp. The around her neck collapses and falls off. Without the collar holding her up, she falls limply to the ground, dead. Egwene turns and takes a few steps and falls to her knees with a gasp. She sits among the destruction. Behind her, Rand's voice.

Rand: Egwene.

Egwene doesn't move. Rand steps up to her.

Rand: Egwene.

Confused, Egwene turns to look at him.

Masema and the Aiel continue fighting the Seanchan in the streets. Perrin, Loial, and Mat continue toward the Tower.

Perrin: Egwene...
Mat: Rand'll be headed where she is.
Perrin: Rand? Are you sure?
Mat: Yes, he's alive. I've seen him with my own two eyes. He's got shit hair, but he's alive.
Loial: We must get the Horn to Rand al'Thor.
Perrin: We can't even open it.

Mat smiles and looks at his spear.

Mat: Why didn't you say that?
Loial: Of course.

Loial puts down the chest.

Atop the Tower, Rand steps to Egwene and kneels beside her.

Rand: I'm here.
Egwene: How? Why?
Rand: I came to save you. But it looks like you didn't need it. I'm sorry, I should have told you. I thought it would be better this way. I'm sorry. Come on, let's get out of here. All right?

Egwene nods and Rand helps her up.

Ishamael: In the flesh this time.

Rand and Egwene stop as Ishamael steps out.

Ishamael: Welcome.
Rand: Ishamael.

Egwene steps forward, about to channel, but Ishamael flicks her aside with the power. She crashes into a stone wall. Rand steps toward him and Ishamael does the same to him, in the opposite direction, toward the ocean. He sends up a signal.

On one of the Seanchan ships, damane channel at the command of the sul'dam. Suroth oversees from her seat above them, with Alwhin at her side. The One Power weaves up toward the Tower, shielding Rand.

Ishamael: It's the same as your last life. You try to be so honorable... so proud, so perfect.
Rand: I'm not Lews Therin.
Ishamael: Maybe next time it'll be different.
Suroth: Hold the shield on him until we get the signal. Then we gentle him.
Ishamael: I don't want to do this again. And I don't think you do either. Look at her. You abandoned her. You made her a killer. If you keep fighting him, you'll turn them all to the Dark. Just like you did in your last life. Just like you did to me.

In the streets, Mat uses the dagger to cut through the chest, revealing the Horn of Valere. The corruption of the blade coils black over the chest. Mat pulls out the untouched Horn of Valere. The Seanchan soldiers approach.

soldier: Get him, get him.
Perrin: Get the Horn to Rand!

Perrin and Loial fight the soldiers.

Mat: Perrin, I'm not leaving you. I'm not.
Perrin: None of this matters if Rand doesn't have that. You're his only hope.
Loial: We'll buy you some time. Go!

Mat runs with the Horn.

soldier: Get him! Don't move!
soldier 2: Get him!

Bain takes down several soldiers, allowing Mat to get away. As the fighting continues, Perrin and Dain are suddenly side-by-side fighting the Seanchan.

Dain: Two Rivers?

They continue fighting the Seanchan together.

Mat continues running for the Tower with the Horn.

In the streets, Nynaeve tries treating Elayne's wound, but she's unable to embrace the One Power. People run and scream through the streets. Soldier shove people aside.

soldier: Move!
Elayne: Close your eyes, picture a bud, soft like...
Nynaeve: I can't do it like that. It's either there, or it's not.
Elayne: You can do it, Nynaeve.

Nynaeve closes her eyes to concentrate.

Perrin runs through the battle and comes across Eamon Valda.

Valda: You.

Some of the Whitecloaks with Valda attack Perrin, knocking him down. Valda gets on top of him, holding a blade to Perrin's throat.

Valda: Now we'll find out what you really are.

Perrin tries reaching for an axe but it's out of reach. Hopper comes running in, barking. He attacks Valda, knocking him off Perrin. Geofram sees the attack, and swings his axe into Hopper's back.

Perrin: No.
Geofram: Valda, with me.

Valda leaves with Geofram. Perrin stares into Hopper's eyes as Hopper whimpers and bleeds out. Perrin's eyes turn golden, as do Hopper's. Above Hopper, Perrin sees a vision of Hopper jumping up and snapping as sparks in the air. Enraged, Perrin picks up his axe and goes after the Whitecloaks.

In the streets, the Aiel and the Whitecloaks are battling the Seanchan. Perrin sees Geofram and burries his axe in Geofram's chest.

Mat runs out on a palace wall. His way forward is blocked by Seanchan soldiers. He almost runs back but stops. He looks at the soldiers, and down a the Horn in his hands.

soldier: Attack!

The soldiers charge at Mat. Mat brings up the Horn and blows. Time slows for everyone else but Mat. Behind him, a mist appears.

Mat: I... I... I remember.

The mist grows, and from the mist stand the Heroes of the Horn. Mat turns to them.

Mat: The Heroes of the Horn. I am one of you.
Artur Hawkwing: I have fought by your side times beyond number. Fight with us once more.

Hawkwing raises his sword. Amaresu extends her hand, and Mat hands her the Horn, and she puts it away in a swirl of mist.

Uno: Well, let's not just fecking stand here.

Mat nods and turns back to the Seanchan soldiers, for whom time is still slowed.

Mat: Dovie'andi se tovya sagain!

Mat and the Heroes charge at the soldiers, and time returns to normal. The armies clash.

From the Heroes, a streak of mist leaves and heads into the city streets.

Perrin burries his axe into Geofram's chest again. Dain sees from a distance.

Dain: Father. No. No! Father!
Loial: Perrin, look out.

Dain rushes Perrin, and Loial pulls Perrin back. The streak of mist from the Heroes materializes into Uno, who knocks Dain back with his shield.

Loial: Perrin. Perrin.
Dain: No. No! Two Rivers!

Loial holds back Perrin and Whitecloaks pull Dain away.

Dain: Oh, no, no! No!
Uno: Don't be so bloody surprised I'm a Hero of the Horn.

Uno hands Perrin his shield. He then turns back to the soldiers and draws a second sword to fight.

Loial: Get to Rand. We'll hold them.

Perrin runs for the Tower.

Atop the wall, the Heroes continue fighting the Seanchan. Mat makes it past them and runs for the Tower.

On the street, Nynaeve is still trying to help Elayne.

Elayne: It's all right. Use what you know. You're a Wisdom.
Nynaeve: I'm-I'm going to push it through. This will hurt.

Elayne nods. Nynaeve pushes on the arrow shaft. Elayne cries out.

Nynaeve: It's through. We have to get to Egwene. Can you...?
Elayne: I'm all right.

Nynaeve helps her up, and Elayne winces in pain. With Elayne's arm around Nynaeve's shoulders for support, begin moving toward the Tower.

Elayne: Leave me. I'll just slow you down.
Nynaeve: We don't know if I'll be able to channel when I get there. Whatever she's facing, she needs you, not me.

Atop the Tower, Ishamael looks down at Rand.

Ishamael: Well... it looks like our time is up. Will you join us?

Rand forces himself to his feet.

Rand: I will never serve him. In a thousand lives, I never have. I know that. I'm sure of it.
Ishamael: She's right, you know. You're so much like Lews. But different, too.

Behind Ishamael, Rand sees Mat step out.

Ishamael: Ah, well.

Mat throws his spear at Ishamael. It passes through him like there's nothing and impales Rand in the stomach. The image of Ishamael disappears. Mat looks around, startled, and runs toward Rand.

Mat: Rand. Rand, brother, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

Mat pulls the spear out of him and holds him.

Mat: Rand. Rand. Rand. Rand.
Ishamael: Such a simple illusion. How could you not see it?
Mat: Rand, Rand, Rand, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Rand. I'm sorry.
Ishamael: If it's any consolation... I'm sorry, too, old friend. I truly am.

Ishamael moves as though to channel, but is pushed back with a blast.

Ishamael: How did you...?

Egwene steps out between Ishamael and Rand.

Ishamael: You. You cannot face down one of the Chosen, child.

Egwene channels a massive shield. Ishamael throws blasts at her.

On the beach, Moiraine and Lan are still heading toward the city. Moiraine stops to look up at the Tower.

Lan: Keep moving. There's soldiers on these cliffs. What is it?
Moiraine: Shielding.
Lan: Are there weaves?
Moiraine: I think it's Rand they're shielding.
Lan: Why? You don't know who they are. What if Lanfear put us here for you to do this? What if those ships are full of innocent people? What if it's not Rand?
Moiraine: I will let a thousand innocent people die if there's even a chance that he will live. That is what it means to support him, you do understand that?

Lan nods. Seanchan soldiers shout in the distance. They look back down the beach at soldiers heading for them. Moiraine and Lan share a look, and Moiraine turns back to the Tower and Lan turns to the soldiers. Lan draws his sword as Moiraine begins to channel. Lan holds back the soldiers as Moiraine works her weaves.

Atop the Tower, Ishamael continues to blast at Egwene's shield, and he's beginning to overpower her. Holes are opening in her shield.

Rand: Egwene.
Egwene: I'm sorry.

Perrin runs in with Uno's shield, helping Egwene hold of Ishamael.

Egwene: Perrin?
Perrin: I'm here. Nynaeve's here, too.

Nynaeve arrives with Elayne. Egwene sees them and indicates Rand.

Egwene: Go. Hurry.

Nynaeve and Elayne go to Rand and Mat.

Mat: I'm sorry. It was a mistake. I'm sorry.

Nynaeve and Elayne kneel with them, Elayne wincing in pain as they move.

Nynaeve: Rand. Rand.

Rand looks up at Elayne, who begins to channel to heal his wound.

Rand: Who are you?
Elayne: Elayne.

Elayne heals the wound closed, but black tendrils of the dagger's corruption run along the scar.

Mat: Rand. Rand, you're gonna have to do something.
Rand: I can't. I'm shielded.

Moiraine continues to channel on the beach, and sends weaves at the Seanchan ships. Aboard their ship, Suroth and Alwhin take notice. The weaves blast through their ship, sending them into the water. The shield the damane held on Rand is broken.

Mat and Nynaeve help Rand up. Rand picks up his sword and steps up to Egwene's shield. He channels around himself and through his sword,, steps past the shield, and stabs Ishamael through the heart. He grips the bottom of the blade for stability as he pushes the sword into Ishamael's body. The one power dissolves the blade, and Ishamael collapses to his knees. Rand looks at his hand, where a Heron mark is seared into his palm from the blade. Ishamael falls onto his back and looks up at the seagulls.

Ishamael: It's... It's beautiful. Do you see it, Lews?
Rand: What do you see?
Ishamael: Nothing. Nothing at all.

Ishamael's body disintegrates to dust and blows away, leaving nothing.

On the beach, Moiraine continues to channel. The Seanchan soldiers are all fallen, and Lan returns to Moiraine's side.

Lan: They're retreating.

Moiraine lets go of her weaves. The remains of the Seanchan fleet are smoking.

Moiraine: "Above the Watchers shall the Dragon be proclaimed, bannered 'cross the sky in fire."

Lan steps back as Moiraine works another weave. She sends this one up to the Tower.

Atop the Tower, Rand looks down at the city. A bell rings. Moiraine's weaves form a dragon of fire that encircles the Tower and roars. People in the streets cheer and appload, looking up at them on the Tower. Aviendha, Bain, and Chiad lower their veils.

Aviendha: Car'a'carn.

The Heroes of the Horn fade into mist. Separately, Masema, Lanfear, and Loial look up from the streets. The dragon roars and fades away.

Palace[]

Timestamp: 01:01:40

Lanfear walks through the palace, looking pleased. She enters Ishamael's room, and finds all six remaining seals broken. A woman sits by the fire, working weaves like spider-webs in her hands.

Moghedien: Softly, softly, from the shadows. Softly, softly, from the shadows.
Lanfear: Moghedien.
Moghedien: [chuckles] Ishamael let us out. All of us. He had this sneaking suspicion you were going to betray him.
Lanfear: Where are the others?

Moghedien shrugs. Lanfear channels, and Moghedien brings down a tunnel of weaves like a spider's web around Lanfear.

Moghedien: [sighs] Yeah. You and Ishamael were always too close to the Dragon. The rest of us don't share that failing. "Softly, softly, from the shadows." That's what you always said about me, isn't it? That I was too cautious, too afraid... too weak.
Lanfear: You don't want to fight me.
Moghedien: [laughs] Mm, this is not a fight. This is a warning. When I strike, I don't miss. Stay away from him, Lanfear. He's ours now. All five of them are.

Moghedien backs away, chuckling.

Moghedien: Softly, softly, from the shadows.

Moghedien slips from the room with the one power, and Lanfear is released from Moghedien's weave. She gasps. Light returns to the room. Lanfear looks at the broken seals.

Lanfear: Light help you, Rand al'Thor.
