Plot summary[]
95 years ago in Tanchico, a young Liandrin cradles her child Aludran to be quiet as Boral doesn't like noise. Boral soon enters the scene with a midwife and demands that the midwife take the baby and drown it. However, Liandrin uses her Channeling to kill both the midwife and Boral, allowing her to make her escape. Outside, all people of Tanchico refuse to help her until Ishamael appears and offers it to her.
In the present, Liandrin sits in the Amyrlin Seat and is met by Lanfear. Lanfear asks if she's working for Rahvin but denies it. Hence, Lanfear notes that Rahvin has one of her Black Ajah under his influence, and she orders Liandrin to kill that one.
Soon, Lanfear shows the other Black Ajahs a picture of a broken statue by the Tanchico docks called the Chained Man, a man who can Channel and was chained by two Aes Sedai. She orders them to find the final piece of what's missing to chain the Dragon Reborn.
Elsewhere, Nynaeve and Elayne get dressed and discuss the names and backgrounds of the Black Ajah. They're soon joined by Mat and Min, and it's decided how they'll proceed from there on out.
Egwene is reprimanded by Bair and Melaine for entering Tel'aran'rhiod without them, while Moiraine meets with Lanfear.
Meanwhile, Rand is led by Aviendha to where the Aiel grow their food. There, Rand gets into a spat with Alsera over touching her spear and makes amends with her by promising to harvest her squash when they're ripe.
At Two Rivers, the wounded Perrin is carried to the Winespring Inn. Although it's requested that Alanna heal him, it's revealed that her own wounds prevent her from doing that. Unbeknownst to the residents, Padan, a couple of Trollocs, and Darkfriends stand by a hill overlooking the village.
Elayne talks to a couple of people, as does Mat, until he hears Thom Merrilin singing in the distance and approaches him. Although Mat was elated to see Thom, Thom didn't reciprocate the sentiment after having to fight off a Fade in their last encounter. Still, Mat at least convinces him to join him for a drink, and at the bar, Min talks to Nynaeve, and during their conversation, Min tells a Handsome harbor master, he's destined to marry a lovely lady. However, as Min said to Nynaeve thereafter, Jean doesn't marry him; she kills him.
At the Lounalt clan house, Liandrin meets with Nyomi in her room, all while Moghedien performs mischievous acts around the place.
In Tel'aran'rhiod, Egwene continues training with Blair and Melaine and seemingly successfully pushes them out of her dream. However, right after this, Egwene is bound to a wheel by Lanfear and talks to her about Rand. Bair and Melaine manage to wake her up and advise her about taking control of her dreams.
That night, Rand talks with Moiraine for the first time since they left Rhuidean, and Rand learns about what Moiraine saw as possible futures for him and more.
With his wounds starting to get better, Perrin has a heart-to-heart with Faile about her background and how her mother revealed she was a Darkfriend and tried to convert her.
Meanwhile, at the White Cloak camp, Padan and his cohorts, disguised as White Cloaks, arrive at the White Cloak camp as the reinforcements they were told about.
After learning that Rand is the Dragon Reborn and Mat is Blower of the Horn of Valere, Thom tells Mat that he has no intention of involving himself with his situation. Thom also advises him to stay away from Liandrin, but when he spots Elayne in trouble, he intervenes by claiming she's his apprentice. To prove their claim, Elayne performs The Hills of Tanchico for all of the bar patrons, and Thom performs the instrumental bit.
Back at the bar, Nynaeve and Min learn from an old man there that a couple of weeks back, the entire Lounalt clan was wiped out by Liandrin herself. Nynaeve pays the man in favor of learning everything he knows about her, while unbeknownst to them, Ispan witnessed this interaction.
Confined to a bed, Liandrin interrogates Nyomi about where the collar they're looking for is. Nyomi confesses it's in the Panarch's Palace. After learning this, Liandrin kills her and then listens to a report by Ispen.
In the Winespring attic, Maksim continues to watch over Alanna, who suspects she's at her life's end, but Eldrin and Bode arrive and reveal they're Channelers. Following Alanna's guidance, they use their power to heal Alanna.
Downstairs, Perrin reveals to Faile that he's a Wolfbrother and that his friend Mat has and blew the Horn of Valere. Although Faile was upset at Perrin for withholding this from her for so long, he shares a kiss with her, which is interrupted by the appearance of Maksim and Alanna.
Min and Nynaeve regroup with Elayne's side, and Mat introduces them to Thom. As they try to leave, a man stops Mat and sells him the bracelet he was searching for. Thom, who recognized it, informs the ignorant Elayne of its history to Elayne and Nynaeve.
Moghedien intercepts Ispen, who intended to meet with Rahvin in the dream world, coerces her to detail about Nyomi's death, and that two of the five are in Tanchico. Learning this, Moghedien killed Ispen and then confronted and manipulated Nynaeve and Elayne to tell her everything she wanted to know about why they were there and what they were after. She also forcefully takes the bracelet away from them, but Nynaeve is resistant before she can take it.
Egwene confronts Rand about being in a romantic relationship with Lanfear despite her being a Forsaken and their relationship as a whole. Eventually, Sammael and his Gray Men ambush them, but Aviendha intervenes. Ultimately, Rand uses his channeling to fend off Sammel but learns that Alsera is dead in the aftermath. The loss emotionally overwhelms Rand, who tries to use his channeling to revive her, but Moiraine stops him as it would be futile for him to try.
From Faile's side, Faile, Bain, and Chiad witness an incoming army that Perrin will soon have to deal with.
