Taren Ferry is a small town in the Two Rivers, situated on the southern bank of the Taren River.[1][2]
Overview[]
Taren Ferry provides an important river crossing between the Two Rivers and the west of Andor. It is considered a gateway to the world at large for those crossing from the south.[2] The North Road ends at the Taren Ferry dock, and anyone wishing to continue north must charter the ferry to cross the Taren River.[1]
Being the closest village to the rest of the world, its culture is less steeped in Two Rivers traditions.[1]
History[]
Like the rest of the Two Rivers, Taren Ferry was once part of Manetheren prior to the Trolloc Wars.[2] It is now located in the far west of Andor, though it is less isolated than the rest of the Two Rivers, being the region's link to the rest of the world.[1]
Season 1[]
On Winternight, Perrin Aybara tells Rand al'Thor and Mat Cauthon that folk from Emond's Field went down to Taren Ferry with the wool the previous week, and that they saw the town full of soldiers and mercenaries heading south, saying that there is a war in Ghealdan.[3]
After the Trolloc attack on Bel Tine, the Aes Sedai Moiraine Damodred and her Warder Lan Mandragoran make it to Taren Ferry with Rand, Mat, Perrin, and Egwene, just as the Shadowspawn army is ready to catch up to them. After he does not realize the gravity of the situation, Moiraine gives a large sum of money to the ferrymaster, Master Hightower, to ensure that they can make a safe crossing. When the party has finished crossing the Taren River, Hightower is shocked to see the Shadowspawn, and wants to go back for his son, but Moiraine and Lan do not want to jeopardize their escape, and Lan cuts the rope anchoring the ferry, with Moiraine channeling to sink it in the river. Hightower tries to swim to the ferry, but is pulled under the river and drowns, with Moiraine's party making their way east as soon as they can.[2]
