Previously on[]

Liandrin: Something is coming, and we're not ready for it.
Alanna: Egwene is stronger than most. But you have ten times that power, Nynaeve.
Liandrin: I want to see you become so powerful that no man will ever be able to take that away from you.
Mat: I haven't touched that dagger in six months. I am not a threat to you.
Liandrin: Naivety doesn't suit you.
Moiraine: I know about the man you meet in Northharbor. Walk away, or I will tell your Red Sisters where he lives.
Loial: I know very little about this sniffer Lord Ingtar's hired.
Perrin: There's a rage inside of me.
Bayle Domon: The whole dial was covered in a poem when they found it, written in blood.
Lan: The bond made things easier. It was like a friend chatting away so we never had to, and now, silence.
Lan: What aren't you telling me?
Rand: What do you see now? The Eye of the World?
Min: Wish I didn't.
Rand: It's true, isn't it... what they say about men who can channel? That eventually, they go so mad, they kill everyone they've ever loved?
Moiraine: It is.
Rand: Tell them I died here. Tell them I didn't make it back.

Rand in Cairhien[]

Rand is dreaming. He's in the Two Rivers and his friends are dead on the ground around him. There's blood on his hands and his sword is bloodied.

Rand: No!

Awake, Rand stands at the window of his room in an inn.

Selene: Rand? Another nightmare?
Rand: No. I should get to work.
Selene: You still owe me room and board for this month. Don't be late. I'll have to charge you interest.
Rand: I won't be. Your rates are too steep for me.
Selene: All these nights together, and it's always the same ending.

Selene leaves. Rand sighs. Indistinct whispers continue.

Dressed, Rand walks through the Foregate, an impoverished district outside the gates of the inner city of Cairhien. He passes boy and gives him some coins.

Rand: Here, son.

Rand walks by other children playing. A seller calls to him and tosses him flatbread.

Man: Hey, here, friend.

Rand catches it and eats it as he walks. At the gate into the main city, he shows papers to a guard, who checks it and lets Rand pass. The inner city has stone buildings, paved streets, and women walking in fine dresses.

In the sanitarium, Rand takes off his coat and puts on a blue robe of the orderlies. He walks through the halls with fresh blankets. Distressed patients shout and whimper. A woman stands wailing in her room. A man twitches in a chair. The indistinct whispers that Rand hears grow louder, louder, until they form words...

man's voice: Do you hear me? You are mine, Rand al'Thor.

Title appears.

Tifan's Well[]

Lan and Moiraine both sit outside, looking weary and not fully recovered from their fight against the Fades. Adeleas comes out. She kneels by Lan, and Moiraine rolls her eyes.

Adeleas: Ah. Lan. [sighs] You sure you don't need more Healing?
Lan: I'm fine.
Adeleas: I'll get you some water.

Verin comes out and sits by Moiraine.

Verin: You're in luck. My Sister and I have decided to accompany you.

Moiraine sighs. Tomas walks by with several saddled horses. Adeleas hands Lan a cup of water.

Verin: I assume you'll head to the White Tower first?
Moiraine: I have been exiled from the Tower.
Verin: I know.

Verin and Adeleas step away, leaving Lan and Moiraine alone again. They share a look. Moiraine looks away. Lan carefully gets up and walks over to her. Moiraine rises with a groan.

Lan: Wait.
Moiraine: We need to leave if I'm to make it to the docks before sunset. I've lost too much time already.
Lan: Where exactly are we headed?
Moiraine: The White Tower.
Lan: You can't...
Moiraine: Have Tomas ready my horse. You're still weak from the Healing. And I don't want my saddle to slip.

Moiraine walks away. Lan sighs. He looks over at Verin, Adeleas, and Tomas.

Arad Doman[]

The Shienarans follow Elyas, who is tracking on foot.

Uno: We certainly won't bloody well catch 'em if the goat-licking bastard refuses to ride a horse.
Ingtar: Tracking's not easy to do from horseback.
Uno: He's just sniffing the bloody air. It's not proper tracking.
Perrin: Well, he's kept us on Fain's trail.
Elyas: Quiet.

Elyas leads them off the path to a river.

Elyas: They crossed here.
Ingtar: Something doesn't feel right. Let's go over. Wherever we can find a crossing. Builder, you stay with the horses.
Loial: As you wish.

Ingtar gives the signal and they all dismount from their horses. They cross to the other side and head toward a stone building.

Ingtar: Split up, search the grounds. This could be a Darkfriend safe house.

Ingtar leads them into a courtyard. Perrin sees the shutters of a window move.

Perrin: There's a woman. In that house.

Ingtar and Perrin enter the house. Laughing children run through the room. A family has food set out for dinner.

Perrin: Sorry. We were worried that you might...

Perrin stops. His eyes have turned golden. It's a vision of something that's already happened, and Perrin watches the family cut down by a darkfriend and a Fade. Perrin looks around the room, shocked. Ingtar looks unconcerned. Elyas stands in the doorway, watching Perrin.

Elyas: This is where it happened.

Perrin looks back at the table, the vision ended. It's covered in rotten food and swarming with flies.

Perrin: Light.
Ingtar: Perrin? Perrin, you all right? There's nobody in here. Let's go.
Elyas: Useful... to know the difference between vision and reality. You don't get lost so easily.
Perrin: Whatever you're doing to me, I want no part of it.
Elyas: Doesn't work that way.

Perrin goes back out into the courtyard.

Uno: Seems Fain and his friends left in a hurry. Probably felt us breathing down their necks.
Elyas: Whatever scared them away, it wasn't us.
Masema: There's something you need to see.

Masema leads them a large door, with a dead Fade nailed to it.

Masema: He was alive when they did this. When they started, at least.
Uno: What could do this to a Fade?
Ingtar: I don't know.
Perrin: You think it was Padan Fain?
Ingtar: Back to the horses. We'll stay in that village by the river tonight.

Cairhien sanitarium[]

Rand brings blankets into a patient's bedroom. The patient, Errol, is sitting on his bed. He recoils at the sight of Rand, alarmed.

Errol: Aielman! My blade. Where is it? Hurry, someone! The Aiel have breached the wall!

Unconcerned, Rand sets down the blankets and smiles.

Rand: It's just me, Errol.
Errol: How do you know my name? How did you get past the guards?
Rand: The guards let me in, like they do every day.
Rand: The Aiel War is over, my friend. Twenty years now. Want to go for a walk?
Errol: We've met before, eh?
Rand: We have.
Errol: This isn't some dirty trick?
Rand: No. I wouldn't dream of it.

Rand kneels by Errol's bed. There's a statue of a horse on Errol's bedside that's fallen over, and Rand sets it upright. He picks up slippers and gently places them on Errol's feet.

Errol: Never thought I'd see the day. Aielmen among us. Nobody bats a bloody eyelash in the whole place. Coming to take me for a walk.
Rand: We get to start fresh every day. But we always manage. Don't we?

Rand gets up and offers Errol a robe. Errol gets up and Rand helps him put it on, and he gives Errol a walking cane. They walk through the halls, with Rand helping support Errol.

Errol: Vicious fighters, you lot. I saw one cut down a whole brigade on his own. And your women...
Rand: Even fiercer?
Errol: Even fiercer.
Rand: Oh. I'm amazed you survived.
Errol: Don't test me, boy. Once a blademaster, always a blademaster. Even if I have misplaced my heron-mark sword.
Rand: [whispering] I'll try to sneak my sword in again sometime. You can teach me a few more forms, right?
Errol: [whispering] Take your pick. Cutting the Clouds, Kissing the Adder...

Errol demonstrates with his cane. Another orderly, Yann, intentionally makes a loud banging noise. The sound startles Errol, who collapses to the ground, covering his head and whimpering. Rand looks alarmed at Yann and kneels beside Errol to comfort him. Yann walks over, laughing.

Yann: Just like the glory days, right, old man?
Rand: Get out of here.
Yann: Now, come on. He's easy to wind up, that one. Always good for a laugh.
Rand: You're going to wind up the wrong person one of these days.
Yann: Who? You? You clean up old man shite all day every day. At least in the garden here, I get to see some of the more famous residents. Well, and the sun.

Yann pats Rand's shoulder and leaves. Unmoved, Rand watches him go for a moment, and then kneels down by Errol again to console him.

Rand: Hey. Hey. That bastard. He caught us by surprise. Next time, we'll be ready for him. Now, what'll you hit him with first?

Down the hall, Yann stands by large doors leading to a garden, where a guard stands. He looks back down the hall at Rand and Errol.

Errol: Parting the Silk to put him off balance. Then Reaping the Barley, before he can right himself. Straight to the heart.
Rand: Pretty vicious yourself, old man.
Rand looks down the hall as Yann walks into the garden.: {{{2}}}

Tar Valon[]

White Tower[]

Egwene brings buckets into the kitchen.

Egwene: Where's Nynaeve?
Novice: Liandrin Sedai herself came in and took her.
Egwene: Took her where?

The novice shrugs.

Hospital[]

Liandrin leads Nynaeve through a hospital. They pass Yellow Aes Sedai and come to the bed of a young girl who is very ill. An Accepted is with her. Nynaeve looks at the child and recognizes the illness.

Nynaeve: Breakbone fever.
Accepted: Begging your pardon, Aes Sedai. Would you?
Liandrin: Oh, proceed, child. We wish only to observe.

Nynaeve sees herbs on a nearby table, including a small vile of a red substance.

Nynaeve: Crimsonthorn root. You aren't going to--
Liandrin: Of course she's not. Breakbone may be a death sentence where you come from, but here, it's easily healed.
Accepted: We dilute the crimsonthorn. Takes the edge off the pain. But the Healing is still quite uncomfortable. Maybe you could hold her hand while I do this?

Nynaeve holds the girl's hand. The Accepted performs a weave, healing the girl. The child now lies calmly in bed, no longer convulsing.

Nynaeve: That was incredible.
Accepted: Took a lot of practice.
Liandrin: Come.

Liandrin and Nynaeve leave the healing house. They talk on the streets of Tar Valon.

Liandrin: When you become Accepted, like that young woman, you learn from each of the Ajahs about their speciality, their purpose: exploring our Great Library with the Browns, learning statecraft and diplomacy from the Grays. And when you come here, the Yellow Sisters teach you that Healing... it's a response to the symptoms and disease you are presented with. But my Ajah? We stop the disease taking root in the first place.
Nynaeve: Men who can channel are not a disease.
Liandrin: I grew up in a small village, too. When I came here, it took a long time for me to wrap my head around the idea that saving one girl's life, great that may be... it pales in comparison to what I actually could do. Using the One Power... it slows the aging process, lets Aes Sedai live for hundreds of years. We can do more than just react. We can change the course of history itself. I could make sure that countless girls I'll never even meet don't need to be saved in the first place. I've asked the Mistress of Novices to turn your studies over to me.
Nynaeve: I heard you're not allowed to teach novices.
Liandrin: You've heard of the Arches?
Nynaeve: The trial novices go through to become Accepted?
Liandrin: When my Sisters ask you if you're ready, I suggest you say "yes." Then our work can begin. [whispering] I'm allowed to teach Accepted.
woman: Sweetcakes, Aes Sedai?
: Thank you.

Cell[]

Mat: You should at least knock. I might have been naked.
Liandrin: Oh, my heart flutters at the thought.
Mat: Are those for me?
Liandrin: Sweetcakes. I'm feeling generous.
Mat: Are they... poisoned?
Liandrin: If I wanted you dead, boy, I could think of far more creative options.
Mat: What do you want from me, then?
Liandrin: We're merely observing to make sure the effects of the dagger from Shadar Logoth have fully passed from your system.
Mat: That why you locked that door behind you?
Liandrin: Enjoy the sweetcakes, Mat.

Liandrin leaves, bolting the door. Mat gestures with his hand, casually indicating Liandrin's movements of bolting and locking the door and then walking away down the hall. Now fully out of earshot, Mat jumps up, eating the sweetcakes, lowers a dresser, and continues his task of digging out the stones from his cell wall.

Novice quarters[]

Egwene returns to her room and finds lavish furniture in the hall and a stack of pillows blocking her door. She picks up the pillows and brings them to the next room, which is filled with attendants preparing the room with furniture, and a young woman in a white novice dress - Elayne Trakand.

Elayne: Oh, you can leave those right there. Thank you so much.

Egwene sets the pillow down.

Egwene: Would you mind not blocking my door?
Elayne: Oh, are you a novice, too? I was starting to think they'd put me in a different section of the Tower. I haven't seen another soul here since I arrived.
Egwene: The day starts early around here. And, yes, I am, but I would appreciate it if you...
Elayne: Will you show me how you've done your room, will you? It's just, with this tiny space, it's just impossible. I've seen closets that are bigger.

Egwene hesitates. Elayne enters Egwene's room.

Elayne: Oh, so you've just moved in, too.
Egwene: Uh...
Elayne: Oh, I'm so grateful I'm not the only one starting today. You really think they'd do a better job at cleaning up before we arrive, don't you think? Mine was full of rubbish, too.

Elayne looks around, and realizes--

Elayne: Oh. No. I see. Um, you didn't just move in.
Egwene: I did not.

Elayne notices something on Egwene's bed.

Elayne: This is lovely stitching.
Egwene: Um...
Elayne: It's Western Andoran, isn't it? The Two Rivers?
Egwene: Um... Why are you smiling like that?
Elayne: Um, it's just, um, I'm so pleased. I-I never thought that the Tower would let me live with the rest of the novices.
Egwene: Why wouldn't you live with the rest of us?
Elayne: Oh, you know, the whole "Daughter-Heir" thing.

Egwene doesn't react, she doesn't know what Elayne is talking about.

Elayne: I'm Elayne Trakand... Daughter-Heir of... Andor? You're my, uh... subject.
Egwene: I'm Egwene al'Vere.
Elayne: Well, it's lovely to meet you, Egwene. You know, they say that some of the greatest pairings in the history of the world were formed between novices in adjacent rooms. Cadsuane Melaidhrin and Elena Katab met just like this. Don't you wonder what the future might hold for us?

Egwene smiles back.

Meeting[]

Sheriam meets with Alanna, Maksim, and Ihvon.

Alanna: Arinvar couldn't join you?
Sheriam: There are some things best left between Sisters.
Alanna: What Liandrin's proposing is just too dangerous. Last week, she wasn't even allowed near a novice. And now she wants Nynaeve to go through the Arches?
Sheriam: Nynaeve is the most powerful channeler this Tower has seen in...
: A thousand years. Yes.
: Everyone keeps saying that.
Alanna: She still can't embrace the Source unless she's angry or afraid, and barely even then.
Ihvon: She could die in the Arches. Many have before her.
Sheriam: Oh, perhaps. Doubtful, with her power.
Alanna: Do you know why these women and men are being born now, Sister? With so much more power than we've ever seen?
Maksim: Not just Nynaeve, but Egwene and the Daughter-Heir, too.
Ihvon: And the false Dragons. Logain, Mazrim Taim.
Alanna: The Pattern's giving us weapons. To fight against him. The Last Battle is near, Sister.
Sheriam: And would you not have Nynaeve at our side... fighting it?
Alanna: You're the Mistress of Novices. You're responsible for these girls.
Sheriam: Liandrin's little cabal have called for a vote, Alanna. And, unfortunately, in the Hall, you speak as one, not three. That is, if you intend to be here to speak at all.

Sheriam looks pointedly at their packed saddlebags. She gets up and leaves.

: Do you want to stay?
Alanna: No. Moiraine... She needs us.

Outside Liandrin's quarters[]

Nynaeve walks up to Liandrin's door, where another Novice is holding a large basket with a pile of red clothes.

Novice: Ah, good. Did you come to help?
Nynaeve: No. Liandrin had told me I could come by. Is she...?
Novice: Liandrin Sedai just left. If you hurry, perhaps you can catch her.

Nynaeve heads down the direction the novice indicated, following Liandrin. She comes to an apparent dead end and Liandrin isn't there. After a moment, Nynaeve figures out that one panel is fake, and she opens it to a secret passage. She follows it out to the streets of Tar Valon, and pursues Liandrin.

: [wind whistling]
Moiraine: Who else knows? Adeleas? Tomas?
Verin: That's close enough.

Verin sees Moiraine's hand on her dagger.

Verin: Good. I wanted to know how far you'd go for the Dragon if you're to lead him to victory. Our Sisters wish to cage the Dragon, to clip his wings. Their fear that he will break the world again blinds them to the truth: that after all these years, our world is still broken, and that what we need is to make it whole once more.
: Well, what's broken cannot always be healed.
: I need an oath of allegiance, Sister.
Verin: An oath declaring what? That I will never betray you? That I will never betray him? Neither of us knows what the future may bring. Either of those things may one day be necessary. And even oaths have loopholes one can exploit. Hmm. For now, you will simply have to trust me, and I, you. There are books in the Tower that might prove useful. Prophecies that speak of Toman Head, of battles in the sky, of a sword of flame and the branded hand that wields it. I will find them. Come. Come back to the fire, sit beside us, hmm?

White Tower[]

Egwene and Elayne walk through the halls of the Tower.

Egwene: And the gardens lead out to the city, but we're not allowed outside the Tower without permission. I've barely spent a few hours in Tar Valon itself.

A Red Ajah Aes Sedai greets Elayne as they pass each other in the corridor.

Farina: Daughter-Heir.
Elayne: Farina Sedai.
Egwene: You didn't really need me to show you around the Tower, did you?

It's so much more than I've had in a very long time. Who do you think of... when you're with me?
Rand: Someone I wish I could forget.
Selene: Well, maybe that will just have to be how this works for us. You'll help me remember... and I'll help you forget.

Elayne: I present to you my secret weapon. The flavor's much better when I can brew it in small amounts. The air weaves that increase the pressure and speed up the fermentation, they're just much more manageable that way.
Egwene: It packs a punch.
Elayne: Sorry.
Egwene: You worked this out on your own?
Elayne: I like to tinker with things. Plus, when one has no friends and isn't allowed to have fun, one must fill the hours somehow. Speaking of friends, was Sheriam Sedai asking you about Nynaeve al'Meara earlier? Do you know her?
Egwene: I take it you do.
Elayne: It's just... people say that she's quite powerful.
Nynaeve: Egwene, are you there?
Egwene: We came here together. She's my best friend.
Elayne: Light! How exciting... Exhausting.
Egwene: No, uh, no, no, it's... it's-it's not that.
Nynaeve: Egwene?
Egwene: She's not doing anything exactly. But I guess that's the problem. All I do is study, work myself to the bone following the rules, while she skips classes, claiming she doesn't even want to be here. The hardest thing is, she says she came here for me, to protect me. Like she's always done. Whether I want it or not. But where is she when I actually need her? She's off sparring with Warders or becoming Liandrin's bloody protégé. I just feel like... the harder I try, the more I fall behind. And the less she tries... the more she gets ahead.
Elayne: Egwene.
Egwene: Hmm?

Nynaeve: Just tell me where we're going.
Leane: Whom do you bring with you, Sister?
Liandrin: One who comes as a candidate for Acceptance, Sister.
: Is she ready to face the Arches?
Liandrin: She is ready to leave behind what she was, and alone, passing through her fears, gain Acceptance.
: Does she know what she fears?
Liandrin: She has never faced them but now is willing.

Lan: I should have sensed the Fades were coming. I should have... I'm sorry.
Moiraine: Do you know when I actually decided you'd be my Warder? It was after Chachin. We were on our way back to the Tower and we stopped at this little village. I can't remember the name, but... But there were three Trolloc heads staked on spears outside the town. A warning. But it didn't faze you. You'd faced so many in the Blight, and I couldn't imagine the courage it took to face the Shadow with... nothing but a sword. That's when I knew. Because I knew that when the time came, you'd be able to survive on your own. You'll go to the Tower and I'll continue alone.
Lan: I'm not leaving you.
Moiraine: I was wrong, Lan. I was wrong about everything. The Last Battle's coming, and we're already losing it. The cuendillar that broke at the Eye of the World, that was the Seal keeping Ishamael imprisoned.
Lan: Ishamael? The Forsaken?
Moiraine: We didn't defeat the Dark One, we set his strongest lieutenant free. The Forsaken are 3,000 years old. They're the strongest channelers that ever lived, and Ishamael may be waking the others. What they can do with the One Power make the Aes Sedai look like tavern magicians conjuring birds from their sleeves. I mean, he cut me off with a flick of his wrist.
Lan: But it takes eight Aes Sedai to cut someone off. Alone, he couldn't, no matter how...
Moiraine: You have no conception of the power they wield.
Lan: Well, then tell me. You and I walk this path together. Every step of it. Every choice, every sacrifice...
Moiraine: We've never walked this path together. You've never seen the forest for the trees because I have never shown it to you.
Lan: I know what you're trying to do. You can't push me away.
Moiraine: Rand's alive.
Lan: No. You said he was dead.
Moiraine: You assumed. I did what I had to do to protect the Dragon Reborn because my loyalty is to him and him alone.
Lan: I took an oath to defend you. To give my life for yours.
Moiraine: And without the bond, you're unable to fulfill that oath.
Lan: I'm still your Warder.
Moiraine: No, you failed me. Without Verin and Adeleas, I would be dead.
Lan: I am not letting you walk away from me again.
Moiraine: I know. Alanna will see you to the Tower. I'll have her take your bond by force if I must.
Lan: I swore myself to you because I trusted you. Because I thought that we were in this together. Equals. That was never true, was it, Moiraine? An Aes Sedai cannot lie. So tell me the truth.

Rand walks with Celestin through the Sanitarium.

Celestin: Yann was attacked in the Foregate last night, so we needed to fill the position. It won't be much different than what you've been doing already. Your charges just have richer families or a special patron, is all. And you get some fresh air.

A guard opens a door and Celestin hands Rand a key. He goes through the door into a garden. He looks around, and Logain Ablar steps out.

Rand: Your usual orderly had a terrible accident last night, so I'll be taking care of you for the next few months. I have a feeling you and I have a lot more in common.
