Nynaeve and Elayne are given a deadly mission. Perrin learns the consequences of his rage. Lanfear begins to play a dangerous game.
Plot summary[]
In a dark, dimly lit area, Lord Gaebril meets with Lanfear and a man named Sammael. Gaebril, Rahvin to the others, demanded to know why Lanfear summoned them there, and she answered that Moghedien was. She states that although she's weak, she'll pick them off individually, starting with Sammael. Rahvin suspects that Lanfear is proposing an alliance to take out Moghedien, which he'll consider after talking it over with Graendal and Semirhage, who note they were hurt that they weren't invited. After Lanfear and Sammael take their leave, Moghedien appears and claims that Lanfear is playing the same game again, this time around, and doesn't want to be locked up for three thousand years again.
At the White Tower, Verin tells Elayne and Nynaeve that despite Amico and Joiya were stilled, they refuse to talk about the Black Ajah. The two novices are entrusted with gaining information from the two Black Ajah; they start with Joiya, who taunts them. They switch to Amico, who reveals that Black Ajah work in groups of three called "Hearts" and that they only have one contact outside of their Heart, hers was Liandrin. She also informs them that Liandrin plans to head to Tear, procure Callandor for one of the Forsaken. Switching over to Joiya, she reveals that Liandrin plans on speaking to Mazrim Taim, the false Dragon in Saldaea.
In her room, Elaida's hand shakes uncontrollably, and she calls for Alice. But Min arrives and tells her that Alice has left with Queen Morgase.
Walking through the streets of Tar Valon, Elayne and Nynaeve talk about who may be telling the truth, until they reach where Liandrin had once kept her son. They discover a seal made from paint and salt by moving aside the bed.
Elaida requests a formal private meeting with Siuan; however, Leane and Mervin reject it as she's not a sitter. Leane enforces this, and Elaida takes her leave, then meeting with her Red Ajah sisters and gifts Galina some wild strawberries and Tsutama a necklace, which she politely rejects. Tsutama asks Elaida's motive, which she responds to have the Red take their rightful place at the heart of the Tower; however, Tsutama rejects pushing such an agenda. Despite this, Elaida proposes a vote be held in the Tower to send eight Ajahs to capture Rand al'Thor, but Tsutama rejects it as the Reds have their own problems which supersede that need.
In the Aiel Waste, the group is led by their Aiel guides, as they progress, Egwene tells Rand that the old woman was in her dreams. However, the woman corrects her, stating she was in hers. They soon encounter an abandoned caravan ring with dead bodies of Tuatha'ans. It's suspected that the Shaido did it, another Aiel clan in a feud with the Taardad. At Egwene's behest, they bury the bodies of the deceased.
From Perrin's side, Perrin buries his wedding ring in his family graveyard, at Laila's grave and is soon joined by Alanna. She tells him of her own family's tradition of how they treat the passing of their family or loved ones after he tells her his.
Eventually, Perrin and his group head into the attic after a group of unknown people have arrived, but they weren't the White Cloaks, but Lord Luc and his assistant. They inform him that the White Cloaks have taken Natti and her children to their camp on Watch Hill.
At the Watch Hill camp, Dain is advised by Eamon to allow him to question the Cauthons, but Dain refuses as they're hostages to lure Perrin to them. However, he allows Eamon to do what he pleases with them if Perrin doesn't arrive by dusk.
Back at the White Tower, Mat has nightmares that cause him to wake up in shock. He's then approached by Min, who tries to talk with him, but it leads to a spat, making her leave upset. In the library, Elayne and Nynaeve research the crest they found in Liandrin's son's room. They learn the crest originated from Tanchico and suspect that Joyai and Amico lied to them. Realizing they should focus on what they didn't tell them, they look at the artifacts that Nyomi had stolen. One of which resembled an older version of what the Seanchan used on the Channelers. It's suspected that's what Liandrin is after, but when they figure this out, a gray assassin attacks them. However, after Elayne deals with him, they find his corpse outside in the hallway. Verin, then, approaches them and tells them about what the Grayman was and that they should return to their rooms until Siuan or she visits them. Leaving Verin, Nynaeve suspected something was amiss with Verin as she never stated who could have stabbed the Grayman.
In Tanchico, Liandrin and her Black Ajah sisters crash a wedding of her great-grandson, whom she kills after trying to marry a young woman. Liandrin has the Black Ajah ladies kill the wedding guests there and has Nyomi erase the young girl's memories.
Min delivers Elaida dresses to Elaida in her quarters and has a heart-to-heart with Elaida about her clairvoyant skills. Elaida then confines Min to the Red Ajah sisters to hold a vote on whether or not to hunt down the Dragon reborn.
At a camp, Egwene has a heart-to-heart with Bair concerning her dream walker abilities. She learns that Renna isn't dead but alive if she can hurt Egwene in her dreams. Bair offers to teach her what she knows when they reach Rhuidean.
Rand meets Lanfear in the dream world, but apparently, Rand was the one who brought her there rather than vice versa. Lanfear tells Rand that it was wise to stay away from Callandor and that something strong enough will break her dark oaths if the Dark One is destroyed. She then talks about a Sa'angreal as strong as Callandor, but regrets telling Rand this and disappears.
Inside a sauna called a sweat tent, Moiraine and Lan talk to Bair and Melaine about how Rand will go to Rhuidean and take the test to see whether or not he's the Car'a'carn. However, they refuse to speak any further on what happens to Rand if he is the Car'a'carn. One Aiel lady takes an interest in Lan, who follows her outside and learns her name is Melindhra. He demands to know why she has the Golden Crane of Malkier on her back. She reveals that during the Blight she fled and was found by a wise one who adopted her into their clan, and hopes that Lan one day takes back Malkier as he wears his father's sword.
In Two Rivers, Perrin informs the residents of his intention to turn himself in, but a majority of the residents reject this notion. Later in the bar, Perrin enjoys a small chat with Lord Luc's companion named Mandarb. Once alone, Loial joins him, and Perrin tells him of his decision to keep his promise to Mat to watch over his family.
Mat confronts Min and tries to make amends with her, but Min looks at Mat and sees a vision of him hanging himself, which perturbs her. Galad intervenes, allowing Min to walk away, and Mat condescendingly praises Galad as he walks away.
Leane visits the Red Ajah quarters and informs them that Suian orders Tsutama to take seven other Ajahs to hunt Mazrim Taim at Saldaea. This prompts Elaida to question who will temporarily replace Tsutama as sitter, which Galinda wonders about herself.
At White Tower, Nynaeve tries to say her goodbyes to Mat, who insists that he follow her, but the two Andor Princes intervene. Hence, Mat fights the two with a quarter staff and bests them. He later follows Elayne and Nynaeve in their quest to head to Tanchico; unbeknownst to them, Min was following them.
In Tanchico, Liandrin draws the same crest she made underneath her son's bed on the ground. She then approaches Nyomi, who was researching the same collar the Seanchan used on Chanellers, but realizes it's not for a woman, but a man. Liandrin intended to use it on the Dragon Reborn. Little did any of them know that Moghedien was disguised as one of the ladies there.
