Ryma is a character introduced in season 2 of the The Wheel of Time television series portrayed by Nyokabi Gethaiga. Ryma is an Aes Sedai of the Yellow Ajah in Seanchan-occupied Falme.
History[]
Early life[]
Ryma was in Tear as a child, and she presumably grew up there.[1]
Ryma trained in the White Tower and eventually became Aes Sedai and bonded Basan as her Warder. At some point she travelled to Falme on Toman Head, possibly sent by the White Tower to investigate reports of an attack.
Season 2[]
When Nynaeve al'Meara and Elayne Trakand enter the city of Falme, Ryma's Warder Basan recognizes them and knocks them out. He takes them to Ryma. When Nynaeve and Elayne wake, Ryma introduces herself and shows them her Great Serpent ring. She tells them that High Lady Suroth has put a description of them out and everyone is looking for them, and she asks if they have any idea what the Seanchan do to women who can channel, referring to the collared damane.[2]
Ryma asks Nynaeve and Elayne what they are doing outside the White Tower. Nynaeve ends up explaining how Liandrin Guirale is the reason they are in Falme, as she is a Darkfriend who led them there. Ryma is shocked that the Black Ajah truly exists, and wants Nynaeve and Elayne to return to the Tower at once so that they can inform the Amyrlin Seat of the urgent situation. However, the Tower initiates refuse to return without their friend, Egwene al'Vere, another Novice who has been seized and made damane. Ryma looks to Basan, and has him give her a concealed a'dam that she has been able to find.
Ryma, Nynaeve and Elayne sit together as they investigate the a'dam. Elayne starts to channel into it, noticing it is a ter'angreal. As Ryma takes the a'dam back, Nynaeve asks how she came by it. Ryma explains how the Amyrlin sent a group of Aes Sedai to investigate reports of strange beasts and enslaved channelers on the western coast, but that they grossly underestimated the threat. She shows Nynaeve and Elayne three Great Serpent rings, explaining that two Aes Sedai were killed with their Warders, while a third, Maigan, was captured and made damane. Ryma explains that she only has the a'dam as her sisters paid with their lives.
Ryma and Elayne try channeling into the a'dam once again, but Nynaeve cannot get past her block. With Ryma knowing that Nynaeve was a Wisdom, she encourages the Accepted to act as if she was treating a patient. This allows Nynaeve to channel a particularly powerful weave into the ter'angreal. The Accepted tells Ryma that she felt that the a'dam needed to be healed, but that it could only be done so if it was placed on a woman, and that it could not be broken. However, at that moment, Basan knocks at the door, and Ryma knows that the damane have come for a female channeler. She entrusts Great Serpent rings to Nynaeve, including her own, asking her to take them back to the White Tower so that they can be burned.
Ryma and Basan are confronted by several sul'dam, damane, and Seanchan soldiers in the streets of Falme. Ryma is able to fiercely resist the Seanchan for some time, and brutally breaks the bones of one sul'dam in the fighting. However, both end up being injured, and it is clear that they cannot go on. Ryma begs Basan to kill her so that she is not captured and made damane, but Basan is himself killed before he can complete her wish. Once she is defeated, Ryma is collared by the Seanchan.[3]
