The Ogier are a sapient, non-human species that live in steddings.[1]
Overview[]
The Ogier are known for their great size, their long lives, and their love for verbose conversation. They are known as great scholars and stonemasons, and have a great respect for nature and peace in their daily lives. The great Builders of the Ogier have built some of the most magnificent structures and cities in the world.[2] However, their true love is for trees and nature.[3]
Most Ogier never leave the steddings, as if they are gone for too long, they will succumb to the Longing, which will eventually result in death.[3] Though some humans fear Ogier simply for being different, educated humans hold a great respect for Ogier. Any Ogier who comes to Tar Valon is permitted to enter the grounds of the White Tower.[4]
Ogier do not have surnames. Male Ogier will refer to themselves by patronymics, while female Ogier have matronymics. For example, Loial will address himself fully as "Loial son of Arent son of Halan."[4]
History[]
After the Breaking of the World, the Ogier helped build many great human cities, such as Tar Valon.[5]
Activities[]
Loial son of Arent son of Halan leaves Stedding Shangtai to see the world, arriving in Tar Valon. While staying in the Light's Blessing Inn, Loial meets the young human Rand al'Thor in the library. Loial takes a liking to Rand, and visits the White Tower to retrieve Rand's friend Nynaeve al'Meara, who he was searching for in the city.[4]
Changes from the book series[]
The Ogier are based on the species of the same name (book spoilers!) from the book series.
- Size: The Ogier are much taller than humans in the book series. They are only somewhat taller in the television series, due to the excessive cost of special effects.
