Meera Syal is a British actress and comedian who portrays Verin Mathwin in Prime Video's The Wheel of Time, starting from the second season.
General overview[]
Prior to The Wheel of Time, Meera Syal was known for portraying Reverend Erica in The Sandman (2022, 1 episode), Dr. Patel in Doctor Strange (2016 film), Judge Sonia Sharma in Broadchurch (2015, 7 episodes), and Sanjeev's grandmother Sushil 'Ummi' Kumar in The Kumars at No. 42 (2001-2006, 53 episodes). Syal is also known as one of the creators of Goodness Gracious Me (1998-2015), a BBC comedy sketch series about British Asian life and culture.
Syal was listed by The Observer as one of the fifty funniest comedians in Britain. In 1997, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), and in 2015 was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II. In 2023, while filming The Wheel of time season 3, Syal won a BAFTA lifetime achievement award.
Meera Syal's casting in The Wheel of Time was announced on October 8, 2021,[1] but her role was not revealed for another year and a half. On May 12, 2023, it was announced that Syal would portray Verin Mathwin.[2]
