Master Hightower is a character in The Wheel of Time television series portrayed by Pearce Quigley. He is the ferrymaster across the Taren River, and lives in Taren Ferry.[1]
History[]
Early life[]
Master Hightower was born and raised in Taren Ferry. He had a son.
Activities[]
Season 1[]
In the night, Hightower is woken, and approached by the Aes Sedai Moiraine Damodred and her party, including her Warder, Lan Mandragoran, and their companions from Emond's Field: Rand al'Thor, Perrin Aybara, Mat Cauthon, and Egwene al'Vere. She asks to cross the Taren, and he says he will ferry them across once his son is here. However, once Moiraine gives him an extraordinary amount of money, promising him twice as much when they have crossed the river, he agrees to ferry them immediately, telling Moiraine that she must be a woman who does not hear "no" often.
As they make their way across the river, Hightower is shocked to see creatures on the other side, and is told that they are in fact Shadowspawn. Moiraine explains that even though the Fade might be able to force the Trollocs to do most things, they will not cross the river for now, and offers to take the ferrymaster to the next town. Hightower refuses, worrying about his family back in Taren Ferry, but Lan tells him that there is no going back. Hightower frantically explains that his son will already be on his way, and that they have to help him, but Moiraine says that she cannot allow it or the Shadowspawn will follow them across, and Lan cuts the ferry's rope, whith Moiraine channeling in order to sink the ferry. Aghast, and knowing that it is the only way to get his son across, Hightower calls the Aes Sedai a monster for what she has done, before trying to swim across to the vessel, but he is pulled beneath the water and drowns.[1]

Changes from the book series
Master Hightower is an adaptation of character of the same name (book spoilers!) from the book series.
Sorry to any Hightower fans for his fate. Are there Hightower fans?—Brandon Sanderson, Some Thoughts from Brandon (Episode Two)
Personality and character
- In the books, Hightower was a somewhat intimidating individual who gives "sly looks" and "growls."[2] Rand was concerned that Hightower might rob their party.[2] In the show, Hightower's most prominent character trait, aside from a dearth of self-preservation, is concern for his son.
- It is unlikely that Hightower from the books would have ever have intentionally attempted to navigate directly into an army of Shadowspawn.
Ferry
- In the books, Hightower responded to the unmooring of his ferry by urging his haulers to retrieve it, but made no such move himself.[2]
