Manetheren (Old Tongue for Mountain Home) was an ancient nation of the Westlands.
History[]
Manetheren was one of the first nations to rise after the Breaking of the World. It flourished for over a thousand years, and helped unite the Westlands into an era of peace by creating a Compact of the Ten Nations.[1]
During the Trolloc Wars, the army of Manetheren was small but strong, and was considered a thorn in the Dark One's hand. In response, Shadow sent the entirety of its forces to destroy the nation, with the people of Manetheren standing before the great host of Shadowspawn, Dreadlords, and Darkfriends, ready to fight.[2]
King Aemon sent messages to the neighboring nations, and Manetheren was promised aid by Aridhol if they could hold the city for three days. The nation was able to stand against the monstrous host, and no Trolloc crossed the river until then. Yet on the third night, no help had come, and they fought on alone. By the tenth day, they knew that no help was coming. From the city, Queen Eldrene organized her people to take the children and find refuge in the mountain keeps, though many chose to join the army fighting for their home. Not a scrap of ground was given up until it was soaked in blood, yet on the thirteenth day, the army of Manetheren was gone.
After Queen Eldrene felt her husband die, she reached out for the One Power in her grief, hurling it at the Trolloc army and setting fire to them even as they tried to flee. The Trolloc army was destroyed, but Eldrene had drawn more of the One Power than any woman could ever hope to wield, and she was burnt through, with the city being destroyed in the process.
Those who had fled to the mountain keeps with the children rebuilt as the humble community of the Two Rivers. Though the proud history of Manetheren was forgotten in time, it was remembered in song.[3][2]
Season 1[]
On the road from Taren Ferry to Whitebridge, Mat Cauthon starts singing "Sing of Manetheren," and is joined by Egwene al'Vere, Perrin Aybara, and Rand al'Thor. Moiraine Damodred says that it is good to remember the nation of Manetheren, but the four youths from the Two Rivers are perplexed, with Mat claiming that it is just a song. Moiraine tells them that Manetheren once stood where the Two Rivers now lies, and the tragedy of its fall during the Trolloc Wars, and ends by saying that they may to indeed weep for Manetheren, like the song says.[3]
