Kari al'Thor was the wife of Tam al'Thor and the mother of Rand.[1][2]
History[]
Pre-series[]
Kari met Tam al'Thor sometime after he left the Two Rivers, and the two married.[1] Tam was a soldier who fought in the Illianer army during the Aiel War; during the Battle of the Shining Walls, Tam found a pregnant Maiden of the Spear, and helped deliver her baby. The woman died in childbirth. Tam and Kari adopted the child as their own, naming him Rand.[3]
After the end of the Aiel War, Kari came to live in the Two Rivers where her husband had grown up. She passed away when Rand was still young.[2] Her cause of death has not been revealed.
Season 1[]
When Tam and Rand are taking the wool and brandy to town on Winternight, Tam reminisces about when the road was just a deer path, and he had to carry the wool. He notes that the brandy stayed home with Kari, as she enjoyed drinking.
The next day at Bel Tine, Rand and Tam light a lantern for Kari. Rand asks if they should be at the village to light the candle, but Tam says that it doesn't matter where they do it, as the practice is to guide her spirit back to them. Rand asks how long it is until the Wheel of Time turns someone's spirit back into the world, and Tam says that he does not know.[4]
That night, Rand and Tam are attacked by a Trolloc and Tam is injured and afflicted with trolloc poison. As Rand gets Tam back to town for help, Tam hallucinates speaking with Kari, telling her about the baby he found. Rand later recalls this as he confronts the truth about himself.[3]
Physical appearance[]
According to Egwene, Kari had red hair and blue eyes like Rand.[5]
