- This article is about the season 2 character. For Rand and Egwene's imaginary daughter, see Joiya al'Thor.
Joiya Byir is a character in The Wheel of Time television series portrayed by Joelle.
Joiya is an Aes Sedai of the Gray Ajah.
History[]
Early life[]
Joiya was born somewhere in the Westlands. She studied at the White Tower in Tar Valon, and was eventually raised to Aes Sedai, choosing the Gray Ajah.
Joiya appears to play a role in the education of novices and Accepted, as she attends meetings with Sheriam Bayanar on how initiates are progressing in the Tower.
Season 2[]
Joiya is present alongside Liandrin Guirale, Alanna Mosvani, and several other Aes Sedai to attend a meeting with Sheriam. The Aes Sedai discuss how Egwene al'Vere and Nynaeve al'Meara are progressing, and Liandrin offers to teach Nynaeve using her own methods. The subject of the conversation soon turns to the dangers of the One Power and the increasingly volatile state of world affairs. Liandrin notes that a new False Dragon has declared himself in Saldaea, and Joiya remarks that it is said he is even more powerful than Logain Ablar. Liandrin thus concludes that the Aes Sedai are not ready for what is coming, and proposes using Nynaeve as a weapon of the Tower.
Joiya is later one of the Aes Sedai who comes to the City of Cairhien when the Amyrlin Seat, Siuan Sanche, arrives to demand an audience with Moiraine Damodred. Liandrin Guirale, Verin Mathwin and Yasicca are also in the party.[1]
Physical appearance[]
Joiya is an adult woman with fair skin and brown eyes. She is bald and has no eyebrows or eyelashes. Joiya wears gray, the color of her Ajah.

Trivia[]
- Joiya's actress, Joelle, has alopecia universalis, which causes her complete hair loss including eyebrows and eyelashes. Joiya appears to have the same condition.
- Joiya's dress depicts fabric weaving together; costume designer Sharon Gilham said this was a reflection of the Gray Ajah, who are negotiators, and represents the Grays' "negotiating skills in 'weaving' people back together."[2]

Changes from the book series[]
Joiya is an adaptation of the character of the same name (book spoilers!) from the book series.
- Age - In the books, Joiya is about 170 years old, and she is described as having a motherly face. In the TV series, even accounting for Aes Sedai's slower aging, Joiya appears to be much younger than that description.
- Hair - In the books, Joiya has dark hair.
