Goatstongue is a herb used to help with sleep. Nynaeve al'Meara carries it in her herb pouch.[1]

Overview[]

Goatstongue is a herb used by healers, such as Wisdoms. It is prepared by brewing it in a tea. The result is helping the patient sleep.[1]

The taste is presumably not unpleasant, as Lan drinks it without noticing.[1]

History[]

Season 1[]

When Stepin greatly mourns the death of his Aes Sedai, Kerene Nagashi, he goes to Nynaeve and asks for some more goatstongue tea to help him sleep. As she retrieves a packet from her herb pouch, he asks if it's actually made from the tongues of goats, and Nynaeve tells him it's a plant, clearing up the misconception about the name.[1]

Noticing Stepin's distress, Lan Mandragoran intends to stay up with Stepin through the night, presumably to keep an eye on him and make sure he's okay. Stepin prepares the tea and serves it to Lan, and the tea succeeds in putting Lan to sleep, allowing Stepin to leave without Lan noticing. Lan wakes in the morning, groggy, and sees the goatstongue tea packet open on Stepin's table. Realizing what has happened, he rushes to find Stepin, who has committed suicide in the hall.[1]

I wondered... if I could get a bit more of that tea you had. For sleeping. It's not really goats' tongues, is it?
