The Dragon Reborn, known as Aman Syndai in the Old Tongue, is a prophecy in The Wheel of Time. The prophecy is that Lews Therin Telamon, known as the Dragon, would be reincarnated as a powerful individual who would either save humanity or destroy it.[1][2][3][4] Moiraine arrives in the Two Rivers searching for the Dragon Reborn.

A False Dragon is an individual who has falsely claimed to be the prophesized Dragon Reborn. Men and women throughout history have claimed to be the one, and at least some of them truly believed they were.

Overview[]

The Dragon Reborn is the reincarnation of the Dragon, Lews Therin. At the end of the Age of Legends, he led a group of male Aes Sedai in an attempt to cage the Dark One forever. When they failed, the Dark One tainted the One Power, causing all male Aes Sedai to go mad, leading to the Breaking of the World.[4] Nearly every woman, man, and child knows or at least has heard of some of the prophecies of the Dragon, though most of them sound like fairytales in the late Third Age.[5]

Every town is said to have a different legend about where the Dragon will be reborn, how they will appear, and the way in which they will break or save the world, and there are many gleemen's tales about the Dragon. Much became unknown about the Dragon, such as the shape she or he would take, or the powers they would wield.[6]

The Aiel have a prophecized one known as the Car'a'carn, their Chief of Chiefs. This appears to essentially be the same prophecy as the Dragon Reborn, as the Maidens of the Spear in Falme recognize Rand as the Car'a'carn.[7]

History[]

Pre-series[]

Although it was believed that the title "Dragon" was given to Lews Therin Telamon posthumously by the female Aes Sedai, he was in fact known as the Dragon Reborn (Aman Syndai) in his own time.[8]

In the early Third Age, the Karaethon Cycle was composed, a series of prophecies relating to the end of the Age, including the Dragon's rebirth. However, the work was translated many times, and some began to doubt how much had truly been preserved of the original text.[6]

In the past, several women and men have proclaimed themselves to be the Dragon Reborn, though they have always been False Dragons.[9][10]

On 2 Danu 978 NE, the Dragon was reborn to Tigraine Mantear, a Maiden of the Spear, on Dragonmount during the Battle of the Shining Walls.[4] The child, Rand al'Thor, was adopted by Tam al'Thor after Tigraine's death, a Second Captain of the Illianer Companions who spared Tigraine's life and raised the child with his wife Kari in his homeland of the Two Rivers.[11]

While bringing news to Gitara Moroso of the end of the Aiel War, Moiraine Damodred and Siuan Sanche secretly learned of a vision of the Dragon's rebirth from a powerful Foretelling she had. She immediately died from the shock and power of the vision after it had concluded.[6][12][13] Moiraine did not know where or to whom they had been born, but she knew that her mission was to find them before the Dark One began to wake.[14] The following year, she began to dedicate her life to locating the true Dragon Reborn.[4] Siuan Sanche and Moiraine's Warder, Lan Mandragoran, were the only individuals to know the true nature of Moiraine's quest, and as Amyrlin Seat, Siuan was forced to distance herself from Moiraine's mission, while privately supporting the endeavor to the fullest extent she could.[6]

The title of Dragon Reborn was claimed by Logain Ablar, though he was a False Dragon.[9]

Season 1[]

After hearing rumors of ta'veren in the Two Rivers, Moiraine and Lan arrive in the region and find five potential candidates for the Dragon Reborn: Rand al'Thor, Mat Cauthon, Perrin Aybara, Egwene al'Vere, and Nynaeve al'Meara, though Nynaeve is too old for the prophecy. Nynaeve is believed dead after a Shadowspawn attack on Bel Tine, but the others leave the region for the White Tower, though are separated in Shadar Logoth. Moiraine reunites with Nynaeve, and also encounters the Aes Sedai guarding Logain, wondering if he could be the true Dragon, though comes to the conclusion that he is truly false, and he is gentled by the Aes Sedai after breaking free and killing Kerene Nagashi. In Tar Valon, Moiraine is reunited with all five potential Dragons, and they head to the Eye of the World through the Ways after she hears of Siuan's dreams, but Mat is left outside the Waygate. After reaching Fal Dara, she tells the four youths that whoever is not the Dragon will die. Rand goes to Min Farshaw, who confirms her viewing about him going to the Eye of the World. He tells Moiraine that he is the Dragon, and they head into the Blight.[11]

Season 2[]

Lan, Perrin, Nynaeve and Egwene all believe that Rand died at the confrontation at the Eye of the World, but he has in fact begun a new life in Cairhien. Ishamael also tells various important Darkfriends at an important meeting that Rand is the true Dragon Reborn. However, the rest of the world remains unaware of the Dragon's identity, and a male channeler named Mazrim Taim proclaims himself to be the Dragon Reborn in Saldaea.[15] Meanwhile, Logain continues to believe that he is the true Dragon Reborn and the reincarnation of Lews Therin.[16]

Verin Mathwin has become aware that one of the three boys Moiraine was traveling with was the Dragon, a fact which the Brown Sister reveals to Moiraine herself as they are traveling south in Arafel. Moiraine also lets Lan know that Rand is alive before they part ways.[17]

Trivia[]

  • In audition scripts, the Dragon Reborn was called the "Naga Reborn".[18]
  • Rafe Judkins explained that the writers imagined the Dragon Reborn as similar to trying to find an incarnation of the Dalai Lama, rather than a parallel to Jesus Christ.[19]
