Dónal Finn is an Irish actor portrays Mat Cauthon beginning in the second season of Prime Video's The Wheel of Time.
On September 20, 2021, it was announced that Finn was cast as Mat for season 2, as actor Barney Harris would not be returning to the role after season 1.[1]
General overview[]
Prior to The Wheel of Time, Dónal Finn was best known for his portrayal of Ivan in Chasing Bono at the Soho Theatre. His other roles include How to Build a Girl and a small role in Netflix's The Witcher. He is an alumnus of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
Dónal Finn said that "it was a whirlwind of getting cast in a role" of Mat Cauthon. He was filming a different project in Morocco, and then immediately went to Prague for a reading, costume fitting, hair cut, and "before [he] knew it, [he] was on the set."[2] He hadn't watched season 1 before stepping into the role in season 2.[3]
Since Dónal Finn's background was primarily in theatre, director Thomas Napper had Finn and actress Kate Fleetwood rehearse their scenes together sort of like a play prior to filming, which Dónal Finn said helped him a lot.[4]
