The Cairhien sanitarium is a facility in The Wheel of Time. The sanitarium houses and cares for mentally ill patients.

Overview

The sanitarium is located in the inner city of Cairhien. It is run by staff who wear blue robes. The facility cares for mentally ill patients. Some patients, such as those from wealthy families or with benefactors, have privileges such as access to a garden.

Orderlies wear a light blue robe with a pattern down the hem. Patients wear a dark blue uniform.

Plot summary

Between seasons 1 and 2

Following Logain Ablar being gentled by the Aes Sedai and standing trial in the White Tower, Moiraine Damodred had it arranged for him to be moved to the sanitarium in Cairhien. He was a privileged patient with access to a garden. Yann was the orderly primarily caring for him.

After leaving the Eye of the World, Rand al'Thor took up residence in the Foregate and got a job working as an orderly at the sanitarium.

Season 2

Rand arrives at the sanitarium and changes into his blue robe that the orderlies wear. Rand cares for the patient Errol, helping him get dressed and helping him walk around the hallways, and he listens to Errol's stories about the Aiel War. Yann startles Errol, triggering him, and Yann laughs. Yann gloats that he gets to spend his days with the more famous residents.

After Rand beats up Yann in the Foregate, Celestin reassigns Rand to take over Yann's work and his patients, which allows Rand to meet Logain Ablar. Rand eventually asks Logain to train him, and late that night he brings Logain a bottle of Ghealdanin red wine in exchange for his help, although Logain doesn't give him the help he wants.

Moiraine Damodred visits Logain in the sanitarium when she returns to Cairhien.
