Breakbone fever is an often deadly disease that causes one's muscles to cramp so severely that it can break bone.[1]

History[]

Pre-series[]

In 988 NE, Bran and Marin al'Vere brought their daughter, Egwene, to Doral Barran, the Wisdom of the Two Rivers, as she was suffering from breakbone fever. Doral did not know what to do, and made a tea to ease her passing. However, Egwene refused the tea, and stayed with Doral's young foster daughter and apprentice, Nynaeve, all night. By the morning, her fever had broken.[1]

Season 1[]

In the Light's Blessing Inn in Tar Valon, Nynaeve relates the story of Egwene's breakbone fever to Rand when they are missing Egwene. Nynaeve tells Rand that Egwene's experience with the fever shows how she is unbreakable.[1]

Season 2[]

Liandrin Guirale takes Nynaeve to a Yellow Ajah healing house where a young girl is afflicted with breakbone fever. Nynaeve recognizes the illness immediately. An Accepted demonstrates the healing, and Nynaeve remarks that it was "incredible."[2]

Quotes[]

You know, when Egwene was little, barely ten, her parents brought her to us, the Old Wisdom and I. She had an infection already set into her muscles. They were cramping so badly that her legs were bent backwards on themselves. That's why they call it breakbone fever. Usually before the person dies, they snap their own legs and arms in half. The Old Wisdom, she, um... she didn't know what to do. So she started making a tea to ease her passing. But I couldn't. So I took Egwene's hands, and she held on so tight. She looked at me and she said, "I'm not ready." She was so small. She just lay there the whole night while her own body tried to break itself in half. And she didn't cry. [chuckles, sniffles] Not once. And she refused the Wisdom's tea. In the morning, the fever had broken. Not her.

Nynaeve
Breakbone fever.
Accepted
Begging your pardon, Aes Sedai. Would you?
Liandrin
Oh, proceed, child. We wish only to observe.
Nynaeve
Crimsonthorn root. You aren't going to--
Liandrin
Of course she's not. Breakbone may be a death sentence where you come from, but here, it's easily healed.
Accepted
We dilute the crimsonthorn. Takes the edge off the pain. But the Healing is still quite uncomfortable. Maybe you could hold her hand while I do this?

Changes from the book series[]

Breakbone fever is an adaptation of the disease of the same name  (book spoilers!) from the book series. The illness in the TV series adaptation seems to be essentially unchanged from the books.
