They plan to sleep in the barn of a farm, but they are confronted by Master Grinwell. When they confess they were intending to trespass, they negotiate sleeping in the barn in exchange for mucking out their stables. In the night, the Grinwells are all killed by a Fade, and Thom stays behind to hold off the Shadowspawn while Mat and Rand flee north.[2]
