The Black Ajah is a secret Aes Sedai Ajah that serves the Shadow. Although the existence of a Darkfriend Ajah has been denied by the White Tower, the group does truly exist.[1][2]

This article contains spoilers for events throughout the entire series and the identities of all Aes Sedai of the Black Ajah. Do not read any further if you wish to avoid any spoilers about which Aes Sedai are Black Ajah.

Overview[]

The Black Ajah contains a highly secretive structure. Members are organized into groups of three, named "hearts", and have only one contact outside that group. This means that members of the Black Ajah are themselves unaware of most other members in the Tower.[3][4] All members publicly pose as members of the other Ajahs, meaning their identity remains unknown to the Tower.[5]

The Black Ajah are free of the Three Oaths. Liandrin outright lies to Mat by stating that Perrin had never mentioned him in his letters.[6] She also seriously attacks Nynaeve, Egwene and Elayne to an extent that violates the third oath about using the One Power as a weapon.[7] Siuan Sanche accuses Liandrin of being free of the oaths when she confronts her in the Hall of the Tower.[8]

For much of its existence, the Black Ajah followed Ishamael's orders. However, since his death, the overall direction has become vague as the Forsaken fight among themselves. Many are loyal to Lanfear, while others directly follow Rahvin.[9]

Quotes[]

Yasicca
See, this is Sheriam's usual writing.
Verin
Mm-hmm.
Yasicca
But here... it looks as if her hand was moving more slowly. [gasps] Or perhaps it was someone trying to mimic her handwriting?
Verin
No, Sheriam remembered making the notation herself.
Yasicca
Mm.
Verin
Do you think it might look like this... if a weave of Compulsion was being used?
Yasicca
Compulsion? That would break the Three Oaths. It would mean that someone in the Tower has sworn to the Dark. That... Black Ajah really exists.
— Season 2 episode 5 Damane
