Domon is an Illianer trader and the captain of the riverboat Spray.
History[]
Season 2[]
Bayle Domon is the twentieth person to visit Moiraine Damodred in Tifan's Well. Lan Mandragoran allows him to enter the room, and Domon somewhat irritatedly states that usually his customers come to him, rather than the other way around. He notes this especially as the rustic Arafellin town is so far away from a good harbor, but claims that Moiraine left him with no choice. The Aes Sedai claims that everyone has a choice, and instructs Lan to close the door and leave the two of them alone.
Moiraine inspects a pre-Breaking artifact that Domon has on hand. However, Domon states that he has spent enough time haggling with Sea Folk to know that Moiraine is only interested in a broken piece of cuendillar. He explains that he found it a few months ago outside Cairhien when the old moon dial there shattered. Moiraine inspects the piece of cuendillar and discovers there is writing attached to it. Domon tells her that there was a poem written in blood in the Old Tongue, and offers to sell her a copy of it. He offers the cuendillar for fifty marks, and the poem for five more. Moiraine gets him to reduce the price of the poem, but Domon refuses to budge on the heartstone. However, Moiraine outwits him by choosing to only buy the poem without the hearstone, stating that it is all she needs. She thanks Domon for his time and his travel, telling him that the Sea Folk may be good at haggling, but that the Aes Sedai invented the game, asking that he not insult one again.
Before Domon departs, Moiraine also learns more about a group of men that had been following him. He tells her that he saw two men in black cloaks at horseback at Whitebridge, and that their faces were covered by their hoods. Deducing that these were Fades, Moiraine tells him to take his boat to Illian at once, and then to sail east or west as far and fast as he can. Domon protests, explaining that Spray is a riverboat. Moiraine tells him to stay to the shadows instead, but tells him to go as soon as he can, giving him ten marks for provisions. Domon asks her what she has gotten him wrapped up in, but she simply states that "the Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills", and sees him depart.[1]
