Barthanes Damodred is a character introduced in season 2 of the The Wheel of Time television series. He is portrayed by Will Tudor.

Barthanes is a Cairhienin nobleman who is the son of Anvaere Damodred and betrothed to Queen Galldrian.

History[]

Early life[]

Barthanes is the son of Anvaere Damodred. House Damodred was the ruling family of Cairhien when he was born, but they fell from grace after his great-uncle, the king, led Cairhien into the Aiel War.[1]

When he was still a child, he met his aunt, Moiraine Damodred, an Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah.[2]

Season 2[]

When Moiraine returns to Cairhien, Anvaere tells her about the progress she has made restoring the respect given to their family. She explains that nobody will look down on them any more once her son marries the queen.[3]

Barthanes and Anvaere are making preparations for the upcoming royal wedding when Moiraine returns from Kinslayer's Dagger with Rand al'Thor. Barthanes is glad to see that his aunt is back, though she brushes aside his request to stay for the wedding. He later plays cards with Rand in the parlor. Moiraine and Anvaere note that Barthanes seems more like his kind grandfather than either his mother or his aunt do.[2]

When Moiraine is keeping into herself and has become very tired, Barthanes comes to bring her a sandwich. However, he is greeted quite frostily by his aunt. He confirms this with Anvaere outside, who becomes angry with Moiraine about how she has treated her family.[4]

Liandrin Guirale, another Aes Sedai, comes to meet with Anvaere and Barthanes at the manor. However, she asks to speak with Barthanes alone, claiming that it is royal business that only Barthanes can hear as the future king. Once Anvaere has left, it becomes apparent that this is a meeting of Darkfriends: as an Aes Sedai of the Black Ajah, Liandrin has come to give Barthanes on behalf of the Shadow, and tells him that he must kill Moiraine. Barthanes protests, as Moiraine is family, but Liandrin says this is the reason why Moiraine's guard will be down. She also instructs him that he must be ready to kill his mother, too, if it proves necessary.

Barthanes is supposedly led to Moiraine by a man. However, his mother locks him in the cell where she is supposed to be, having overheard his earlier meeting with Liandrin. She is aghast that he was going to truly go through with killing Moiraine, and asks why he turned to the Shadow. Barthanes says it was all necessary for the family, and that him being a Darkfriend is the reason the Damodreds have risen to prominence again so quickly. Anvaere states that Moiraine knows the difference between right and wrong, and when someone should do the right thing, even if it is difficult. She also says that she has already informed everyone of the situation, including the queen. She leaves him in his cell, as a company of armed men approach.[5]
