Arafel is a nation in the Westlands, and is considered one of the Borderlands. It borders the Great Blight to the north, Shienar to the east, wilderness near Tar Valon to the south, and the Kandor to the west.[1]

Moiraine Damodred and Lan Mandragoran are staying in Tifan's Well in the aftermath of the confrontation with Ishamael at the Eye of the World. Verin Mathwin is living here with her sister, Adeleas, and her Warder, Tomas, so that the two Aes Sedai can complete a full history of the world since the Breaking in solitude. Moiraine receives many visitors, and starts to compile a collection of knowledge that she needs. She tries to depart Tifan's Well, but several Fades attack her. She kills one Fade, while Lan appears and kills more, but both are grievously wounded before they are saved by Verin and Tomas. They receive Healing for their wounds.[2]
Moiraine and Lan depart Tifan's Well with Verin, Adeleas, and Tomas. Verin deduces that Moiraine has found the Dragon Reborn while they are on the road in the Arafellin countryside. Moiraine also tells Lan here that Rand is, in fact, still alive. Verin, Adeleas, and Tomas decide to go to the White Tower, as living through the history of the years before the Last Battle is more important than their writings. Moiraine also chooses to leave Lan behind, having Alanna Mosvani, Maksim and Ihvon escort Lan away as they go their separate ways.[3]
