Anvaere Damodred is a character introduced in season 2 of the The Wheel of Time television series. She is portrayed by Lindsay Duncan.
Anvaere is a Cairhienin noblewoman.
History[]
Early life[]
Anvaere is the younger sister of Moiraine Damodred. At the time of her birth, House Damodred was the ruling family of the nation, and her uncle was the king.[1] Anvaere looked up to her channeler sister, and in fact wished to follow in her footsteps, but she did not have the ability herself.
House Damodred was ruined when Moiraine and Anvaere's uncle led Cairhien into the disastrous Aiel War. With Moiraine away in the White Tower, Anvaere was left to manage the affairs of the family. She slowly tried to rebuild the house's standing by taking on Moiraine's network of eyes-and-ears and heavily expanding it.[2]
Season 2[]
Rand al'Thor and Selene crash an upper-class party where Anvaere is attending. Lady Dhulaine gives an invitation to Selene, inviting her and Rand to dine with her. As Selene leaves to find a bottle of wine for Rand, Anvaere begins talking with Rand.[3]
One early morning, Anvaere's butler Jhonas informs her there's a visitor -- Anvaere's older sister, Moiraine. Anvaere has tea prepared and welcomes Moiraine to stay in her old room. When Moiraine begins making plans for the day, Anvaere raises her voice in frustration and asks her to sit for tea, but Moiraine declines because she has other matters to attend to. Moiraine later leaves for the day without saying anything to Anvaere, who she sees speaking with Jhonas. Upon Moiraine's return that evening, Anvaere is waiting for her in Moiraine's room. She informs Moiraine that Moiraine's eyes and ears are now Anvaere's, and if Moiraine wants to know "where that redheaded boy in the inn went" she'll have to ask over tea. Moiraine has tea with Anvaere and gets the information on Rand's location.[2]

Quotes[]
- Anvaere
You'll pardon the intrusion, but I didn't want to miss you. Please, sit.- Moiraine
Anvaere. I've had a long day. I--- Anvaere
This is not what a woman should have to do to talk to the sister she spent half her life idolizing.- Moiraine
If you want me to apologize for leaving, I won't. An Aes Sedai cannot lie.- Anvaere
No, no, of course not. In truth, you did nothing I wouldn't have, if I could've channeled. Light knows I tried, on nights when our family's future looked dim. After Uncle ruined us. After you left. But Father always held out hope that one day you'd return and fix it all. You were his shining star. Shooting star, as it turned out, never to return once you left our sky.- Moiraine
I... I would have come back if I could...- Anvaere
Spare me the false penitence. You had your work, and I had mine. Less important, certainly, but no less demanding. Unless the Tower also taught you how to smile after someone spits in your eye? Or how to beg a neighbor's housemaid for a party's leftovers? But I got on with my work, just as you did with yours. Now my son is going to marry the queen, and nobody will ever spit on House Damodred again.- Moiraine
You've done well, little sister. Better than I would have done with the hand you were dealt.- Anvaere
- — Anvaere finds a way to get Moiraine to have tea with her, season 2 episode 4 Daughter of the Night
Thank you, Moiraine. But somehow, finally, I don't care what you think. I'm not here for your approval. I'm here because you will not endanger what I've worked all my life to build. This is not your house. This is not your city. And I'm not your little sister anymore. All the eyes and ears you had here... they're mine now. The head of the sanitarium, Celestin. The guard you hailed at the gate, Sandair. If you want to know where that redheaded boy in the inn went... you're going to have to ask me very nicely over tea.
Trivia[]
- Anvaere is a painter. Her room is full of paintbrushes and painted canvases stacked against cabinets. A painting hung up in Moiraine's room appears to be Anvaere's work.[2]
- On June 26, 2023, WoT Series reported that Lindsay Duncan would be portraying the role of Anvaere.[4] On August 14, 2023, actress Rosamund Pike confirmed that Duncan would be in the series.[5]

Changes from the book series[]
Anvaere is an adaptation of the character of the same name (book spoilers!) from the book series.
- Older sister - In the books, Anvaere was Moiraine's older sister. In the TV series, she's Moiraine's younger sister, presumably to emphasize that Aes Sedai age more slowly than non-channelers.
- Introduction - In the books, Anvaere is not directly introduced. She's only brought up in Moiraine's thoughts.
- Interests - In the books, Anvaere was only interested in horses and hawking, and Moiraine does not consider her that politically capable. In the TV series, Anvaere is quite capable as a politician, and she has an interest in painting.
