The Amyrlin Seat is the leader of the Aes Sedai.[1] The name refers to both the woman herself and the throne she occupies. Her titles also include "The Watcher of the Seals" and "The Flame of Tar Valon." Among Aes Sedai, she is addressed as "Mother", and she addresses other Aes Sedai as "Daughter."[2]
The current Amyrlin Seat is Siuan Sanche.[3]
Overview[]
The Amyrlin Seat is raised from one of the Ajahs, but is subsequently considered to be of "all Ajahs and none", so she can fairly rule over all Aes Sedai.[4] It can be insulting to publicly mention an Amyrlin's Ajah, as it challenges her impartiality.[5]
The Amyrlin Seat is considered to be the most powerful individual in the Westlands. She is considered the social superior of even kings and queens, and is entitled to demand the presence of any monarch, who is expected to give deference to her position.[6]
Despite the Amyrlin's considerable authority, the Hall of the Tower has its own power and can keep the Amyrlin in check. Amyrlins have even been deposed and stilled by the Hall.[7]
History[]
The title of "Amyrlin Seat" appears to be derived from the Tamyrlin Seat, the leader of the Aes Sedai of the Age of Legends.[8]
Tetsuan was the first Amyrlin to be deposed and stilled by the Hall of the Tower.[7]
