King Aemon was the last ruler of the nation Manetheren. He died in the last battle of Manetheren during the Trolloc Wars.
A song about Manetheren, including Aemon, is sung in the Two Rivers in modern times, but the meaning of it has been lost to time. After hearing the song, Moiraine Damodred explains the meaning of the song and King Aemon's death.
History[]
The Fall of Manetheren[]
Aemon was the last king of Manetheren. During the Trolloc Wars, the small but strong forces of Manetheren were considered a thorn in the Dark One's hand, so the shadow sent the entirety of its forces to destroy the nation. As king, Aemon sent messages to the other nations, and Aridhol promised them aid if they could hold the city for three days.
Despite the onslaught of Shadowspawn, Dreadlords, and Darkfriends, the people of Manetheren were ready to defend their home. The army of Manetheren was able to stand against the monstrous horde for the three days, as per the agreement, and no Trolloc crossed the river. Yet, on the third night, no help had come, and they fought on alone, and on the tenth day, they knew no help was coming. The army was joined by many from the city who chose to defend their home, even though Queen Eldrene had organized them to find refuge in the mountain keeps.
On the thirteenth day, the army of Manetheren was gone. Queen Eldrene felt her husband die, and driven by grief, she reached out to the One Power and destroyed the Trolloc army, though was burnt through in the attempt, killing her and destroying the city.[1][2]
Season 1[]
After leaving the Two Rivers and heading to Whitebridge, Mat Cauthon starts singing a song about Manetheren. Egwene al'Vere, Perrin Aybara, and Rand al'Thor all join in. After the song, Moiraine Damodred tells them of the history of King Aemon, Queen Eldrene, and the fall of Manetheren.[1]
